Bush revamps message on terror fight

<snip>

WASHINGTON - In the thick of an election campaign, President Bush has revived and retooled his argument that the U.S. must fight terrorists overseas or face them here. Despite the unpopularity of the Iraq war, some GOP candidates are borrowing Bush's line.

"We leave before the mission is done, the terrorists will follow us here," Bush warned at a news conference this week.

Rep. Curt Weldon (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., locked in a tight Philadelphia-area re-election race, went a step further. "We either fight them there, or we fight them in the supermarkets and streets here," he said Wednesday in an interview with CNN.

Bush is not on the ballot this midterm election year. But control of the GOP-led Congress is. So the elections could determine the fate of what's left of Bush's second-term agenda.

The fight-them-there theme has been part of Bush's national security stump speech since 2003. But the "follow us here" part is a relatively new twist.

27. Yes, we are fighting them in the supermarkets
It's called continuous and large price increases from the ripple effect of the increases in energy costs due to our great leadership in D.C.

11. This is almost too stupid to comment on.
"We leave before the mission is done, the terrorists will follow us here," Bush warned at a news conference this week.

This appears to have no meaning whatsoever. Follow us home? Like they don't know where we are already? What is it about tying up our entire military in Iraq that stops terrorists from coming to America and attacking our supermarkets, but only as long as we stay there? Would a terrorist from, say, Venezuela have to travel to Iraq and break through a line of scrimmage there before he could return to America and blow up a Piggly Wiggly? But if we leave Iraq, then he could go straight to the supermarket without the side trip? This makes no sense.

The whole "over there, over here" meme is so unspeakably stupid it's hard to believe anyone takes it seriously.

military is elsewhere? :wtf:

is he saying, "they" target ONLY soldiers and will go where the soldiers go? they're, like, confrontational? they "follow" the people with the guns and ammunition? what a dumbfuck!!

40. That Is My Take, As Well
It would seem that since they know where the United States is, and our military is fighting them "over there", then coming here NOW would be the most effective thing.

But, i think the issue in Iraq is one of THEM wanting US out of THEIR country. If we leave, they will get what they want, and there would be no reason to follow us here.

15. I don't think so.
I think the public is waking up. I think that things like the inability of this administration to catch Usama bin Laden "dead or alive" will hurt those associated with Bush. The CNN program last night ("In the Footsteps of Osama bin Laden") helps by putting to rest the myths that bin Laden is {a} a madman who "hates us for our freedoms," or (b} a puppet created by American intelligence.

In "Imperial Hubris," Michael Scheuer quoted Ayman al-Zawahiri: "We thank God for appeasing us with the dilemma in Iraq after Afghanistan. The Americans are facing a delicate situation in both countries. If they withdraw they will lose everything and if they stay, they will continue to bleed to death." (page xxi) It is difficult to imagine an administration that could serve our nation's interests worse than the Bush-Cheney group.

I said to my husband re:OBL, "He seems to be a very rational, thinking guy and there is a lot of truth in what he says".

23. Exactly.......
We could hold our own, alright. And the 'terrorists' know it. They know damn good and well that they couldn't 'beat' us here.
Nope, they got us right where they want us - on their own turf, where they know every nook and cranny and where time is a factor for us but not for them.
They got all the time in the world to pick us off, one by one - ask the Russians - took Afghanistan 10 years - but they did it, bit by bit, one by one......

21. It will be amazing how the "terrorists" will follow us wherever we go
I mean, there will be terrorists if we invade Iraq ... there will be terrorists if we invade Cuba ... there will be terrorists if we invade country X who never had any terrorist ties before (but has oil) ...

It's the new strategy to try to call anybody who resists Bush's world domination plans as "terrorists" ... including a person who has lived their entire lives in the same house who doesn't want it destroyed by the invading/occupying force ...

Then the terrorists can be intercepted before they get here. They will go in to shock from the cold and be clearly visible on the all white background. Thank God they can't read maps or books and find out that America sits in the middle of the North American continent.

26. So, if we stay in Iraq. we are absolutely guaranteed that no other terrori
terrorist from any other part of the world will ever attack us? Do I understand this correctly????

Sounds like a pretty good deal. Just think of the money we would save - no more money AT ALL would have to be spent on national security. I assume that would mean everything from the Department of HOMELAND security, all the safety precautions on airlines, ships, less money spent on policeman, fireman, etc. - actually it is amazing the money we would save. That does not even count the comfort of knowing we are safe and sound.

This IS what Bush is telling us. Right?

Why not just say, "The al Qaeda is hiding in your closet, and if the Democrats win in November, they'll come out while you sleep." And, starting today, all White House press conferences should be held in the dark, with Bush speaking with a flashlight under his face.

44. Oh boy both Curt Weldon and the Bushmeister
are both trying to do a "Churchill"

Rep. Weldon does this quote ring a bell? "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender."

and to the frat boy I would add check out this quote from Churchill "To jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war."

Then to us all remember the following truth about politicians from the psalm 55:21 "The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords."
