Happy Anniversary, Katrina (you bitch)
One year ago, as our merry little band of leftists was returning to Houston from Camp Casey, we heard on the radio that a strengthening hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico had turned toward New Orleans.

That bitch's name was Katrina.

Jordan Flaherty was an eyewitness on the ground; here's the archive of his postings. His journal begins here. I blogged about my experiences helping evacuees in the Astrodome and the GRB convention center; I also posted those of others'. West Houston Dem's account of helping a man from New Orleans was also significant.

Earlier this week the four-part documentary by Spike Lee, When the Levees Broke, aired on HBO. I urge you to watch it.

Here's a Katrina timeline from Think Progress.

scoutp's YouTube is also excellent, particularly the part where Shepard Smith is shouting at Sean Hannity.

I'm left with these still-raw recollections, and the ominous foreboding that it could all happen again, shortly, here in Houston or Miami or New Orleans once more.

Do you feel safer?

1. That YouTube piece is devastating
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvo-qo2mBN4

Does anyone know who the artist of that song is? (tears here)

The failure of this administration in the face of the Katrina disaster is all the indictment needed not only to impeach the whole filthy crowd, but to send them to the Hague forever.

It's called "Louisiana 1927".

I don't know who this woman singing it is.

7. This is one of Randy Newman's
many unsung masterpieces. It's even more devastating to hear him sing it himself--a punch in the solar plexus. SG

8. K & R Devastating!
You can't watch the YouTube video with any clinical detachment whatsoever--it literally sucks your breath away, like the storm itself.

A year on & the emotions are just as raw. This will live in infamy. SG

If it had been a hurricane with a man's name what term would you use? You better be careful who you call bitch you might get some karma bearing down on you. So be afraid, be very afraid. :)

20. Oh, okay.
And that Super Dome was haunted from what I heard. Built on cursed ground or something. I worked with a gal from NO and she said told me ghosts were everywhere and got sick of them so moved to Southern Cal. She was very intelligent and I sure didn't doubt her. She wasn't too keen on giving me details. It just wasn't interesting to her...same ole same ole.

Should've called the hurricane Bush's Bitch. My neighbor has a little girl by that name and when the hurricane came through and everyone talked about it as school has just started it upset her because she thought people were talking about her.
