Veteran's group; bush must start Draft or Lose Iraq
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Group_Bush_can_reinstate_draft_or_0823.html

Fast on the heels of yesterday's Defense Department involuntary call up of Marine reserves, an Iraq veterans group tells RAW STORY that if a draft is not the next step, President Bush must choose to accept a loss in the war.

Reports yesterday indicated that 2,500 inactive reserve members of the Marines were called up for duty in Iraq. The Marines are members of the individual Ready Reserve and have already given four years of service, allowing them to return to civilian life. However, they are contractually obligated to return to service when needed.

But Jon Soltz, who heads up the group VoteVets.org, warned ABC News yesterday that the call up showed a lack of plans for victory in Iraq, and the problems faced by an overburdened American military. Soltz served as a captain in the Army in the Iraq war and is still a member of the reserves.

How desperate are the neo cons to continue this war AT ALL COSTS?

1. I would say that it has started long ago
with reserve call ups and stop loss orders. A draft by any other name is still a draft, and running it this way saves time in getting trained troops to the field.

2. Yes, some say it has already begun.
Sort of sneaky huh?

3. theory: if they re-instate the draft, the war will end immediately.
I've heard this put forward, but the stupidity of the masses is unfathomable.

5. We know that the war will not end
because of the lack of a draft. There is too much money to be made on it continuing. * and his team will find ways such as the recall of IRR, shifting duties within the services, more automation where possible to get around having a draft for Iraq. Now if something else blows up (Lebanon again, Iran, North Korea) I would think there is a possibility, but an outside one. More likely we would see more recalls, more National Guard (he does want complete Federal Control, which is opposed by the states) and more Navy & Air Force types taking on traditional infantry duties along with more contractors. I don't expect a draft.

4. Republiks don't care
Their wee brains and narrow souls refuse delivery on anything to do with reason and compassion.

6. Republicans don't care how over extended our military is, just
as long as they don't have to serve. There will never be a draft and our military is falling apart!

8. I agree with you. The draft is political suicide.
And yes, they don't care if they destroy the military. They don't care if they destroy the country. They're like a farmer who would work a horse to death and then feed off its corpse.

7. A mass casualty event on US soil could give political cover for a draft
The rally-round-the-flag effect is still a very potent weapon in Bush's arsenal.

lose in November.

10. A draft is needed
Only when a draft is instituted will we see mass anti-war protests.

11. They are running out of bodies
to throw at this stupid war. If they are into recalling the IRR they are nearing the end of their labor pool. If they are serious about winning they will have to institute the draft. When they do then they will have to share the sacrifice. And every one knows these selfish neocons don't like to share anything.
