PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN MOTION An Online Newsletter
August 2006
Message from Cecile Richards, President Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Although 2006 has been a challenging year for choice (the words "Alito" and "South Dakota" spring to mind), this August has been a month of victories. Here's the highlight reel:
<> Pharmacies in Illinois will soon have to post signs telling women that it's their right to purchase contraceptives and how to file a complaint if their prescriptions are refused. Gov. Rod Blagojevich proposed the rule to back up his earlier executive order protecting access to emergency contraception.
<> New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, in a challenging fiscal environment, just added $2 million to the state family planning budget. That's a huge increase for one state -- one that will allow Planned Parenthood to see thousands more patients.
<> The Missouri Supreme Court delivered a preliminary ruling that Planned Parenthood affiliates were not required to return almost $1 million in state family planning funds that Planned Parenthood used to provide family planning services to poor and uninsured women in 1999 and 2003.
Let's keep our momentum going as autumn approaches, and with it, new and perhaps greater challenges.
