I was just watching Tweety and thinking...I like John McCain...
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 04:52 PM by Texas Explorer
Prisoner of war hero, very brave man during that time and one of the subjects of a daring, deep-penetrating rescue mission into Hanoi to pull him and the others out. That's something I can be proud of as an American citizen, even if I disagree with the reasons he was there in the first place then nor can I agree with his politics now. He's not a total idiot and maybe he'll even try to lean a little in our direction running up to the mid-terms in order to draw in a larger base, but...

C'mon!

Do they really think this guy could beat Hillary? I mean, is this really the best they got?

ON EDIT: CORRECTION! I misthought the place McCain was held as a prisoner of war. I said "Danang" but meant to say "Hanoi". The correction is reflected in the post. Thanks to others for pointing this out to me.

remaining a Democrat for the 42nd year in a row, thank you.

I was trying invoke a "know thine enemy" thread. If John McCain, who seems to be their front man, is all they have, then they are in BIG trouble.

So, who else do they have? Anyone? If not, then we win in '08.

McCain's daddy was an Admiral at the time. It's been a long time, but I believe he was CINCPAC.

36. Well, they've a few dark horses out there
Mitt the shitt Romney is praying they all step on their cranks so the Ken Doll can roll to the front of the line. Howdy Doody Macaca Allen has already tromped on his...!

They keep flogging Newt "I wed three wives" Gingritch every so often.

And Rudy "I wed three wives, too!" Giuliani is right behind him.

And while everyone in the lamestream media calls Hillary the front runner, she's STILL "mulling." No announcement yet. She's certainly 'positioned' but it would be a riot if she chose not to go for it.

The odd thing is, the more the GOP uses her as "BOOOGA BOOGA AH-OOO-GAH, ah-OOOOOOOO-GAH!!!" Be-Very-Afraid/She-is-Your-Worst-Nightmare, the more people look and realize "Uh, no she isn't, she's not the worst nightmare at all. We're LIVING that, thanks much!"

Consequently, they've kinda backed off on their bashing--it's Cry-Wolfish and not working too well of late. They may start up again later, though--we'll see.

And what exactly was this 'Denang rescue mission'? He was shot down over North Vietnam and spent his time in Hoa Lo Prison (the Hanoi Hilton).

It's been awhile (since the last time he ran for president) since I've visited that chapter in history. So much going on these days to keep up with.

You're right, it was Hanoi. Nice to have people around to gently corrent such mistakes or oversights. Thanks!

13. I honor McCain's bravery and service but am appalled by his voting record.
I think he beats Sen. Clinton in that match-up.

I think he's the best they've got. Among likely candidates, that is. Brownback is psychotic. Frist, THE CAT BUTCHER, is a bumbling dolt. Cement-Head Allen is a RACIST bumbling dolt. Giuliani is a street thug. Pataki is so marginal as to be invisible. Barbour is up to his teensy nuts in scandal. Gingrich is too many divorces away from fundie litmus tests to win many primaries. And Romney has demographic issues.

They're all kind of pathetic, except for McCain, and he retains a significant cross-over appeal for many voters. He gets the Vets and the Reagan Democrats, for example, probably enough in a close race to carry Ohio and maybe other big electoral vote states.

Hagel's too conservative for me, but he's the only GOP contender with even a shred of brains and dignity at this point.

A Hagel-Portman ticket would be a lot tougher to beat than a McCain-anybody ticket.

and as big a hawk as you'll find.

Now he's making a flamboyant show of opposing Bush, but only for underestimating the war.

McCain is very militant and very much pro-war.

20. Daring rescue mission into Danang? ROFL
Danang was in the RVN, and was always controlled by US forces.

McCain was held in Hanoi. And there was no rescue mission for McCain. He was released as per agreement with the DRV government, along with the other POWs, in 1973.

23. It is almost certain that McCain and Bush made a deal
McCain would stop being a thorn in Bush's side, and in exchange, the Bushists would grease the wheels for McCain's coronation in 2008.

I'll bet that works like clockwork, because, you're right: there is no one else in that party who can beat McCain with Bush's money behind him. I mean, who else have they got? Newt Gingrich? :spray:

McCain would kick her ass, no ifs ands or butts. McCain would get all of the various GOP factions plus the Reagan Democrats. Clinton would leak some of the left to the Greens or write-in Dem candidates. It would be a disaster.
