Backdoor Draft
Critical shortage' prompts involuntary recall of reservists by US Marines.
By Tom Regan | csmonitor.com

In a move that critics denounce as a 'backdoor draft," the US Marines and Army are recalling to active duty thousands of men and women who have been discharged for several years. According to the Associated Press, thousands of Marines are being recalled because of "a shortage of volunteers" to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Up to 2,500 Marines will be brought back at any one time, but there is no cap on the total number of Marines who may be forced back into service in the coming years as the military battles the war on terror. The call-ups will begin in the next several months.

This isn't anything they haven't BEEN doing, but maybe people will see it for what is now. This issue should nail the lid shut on the pukes.

7. Say! Why don't we send the Swifties?
If they're so damned macho, let 'em show off on the battlefield then. They'd actually be doing something helpful, for a change.

8. The recalled reservists signed a contract to serve
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 04:12 PM by TechBear_Seattle
I'm definitely no fan of military action, but calling this a "backdoor draft" is utterly ridiculous to the point of being ignorant.

The men and women being recalled signed a binding contract to serve x number of years in active duty. They served only x-y years before getting getting switched to "inactive" status, meaning that they still owe y years of active duty on the contract they voluntarily signed. What the government is doing is requiring these people to fulfil the obligations they agreed to fulfil.

If these soldiers only wanted to serve four years, they should not have sold themselves body and soul to serve for eight.

Added And parents: make sure your kids know what they are getting in to if they enlist. Make sure that they are aware of how much time they will spend being indentured cannon fodder, if not now then in some future war.
