I was kind of shocked by Mayor Ray Nagin of NO in the documentary of Spike Lee's first part on Monday. It was shocking to me the fear he had in speaking the truth-in saying how pissed he was and how desperate things were on that radio interview he gave, and struck by the fact that they said nothing started to happen for the people of NO until this interview.
And then, Nagin tells of "how afraid" he was that he said the things he did. Afraid that he would be spirted away to some CIA camp or worse. Yes, he actually says this in the documentary. Is that what all our politicians are living under? Utter abject fear-until they see bodies in the streets of the cities-they are too afraid to speak up? Is that what we have? All the politeness of politics, all the bullshit-and people die for it. Because of fear. If our government is that powerful-who wants to serve that government? A government you have to fear-taking you to a camp???????
I thought of this again -there is some nun who was cancelled from a talk (it's in LBN) because she DARED to get partisan because she asked for Bush's removal from office. Always the reprisals for free speech, for daring to speak your conscience, for daring to speak the truth. And it amazes me, because the truth is-no one in the world respects this president. If the truth were told almost no one-even in his own party thinks he has the least bit of competence. Yet, they cannot speak the truth. I wonder how many more wars, Katrina's, 9/11's we can stand before they dare to risk the "CIA camp" and save America from this nightmare.
Fear is all we have. It just stuns me. I know the Dixie Chicks were a prime example but those are just entertainers. Politicans are supposed to speak up and speak up for the people. But fear of this president-never duly elected is stronger than anything.
