Why Bush will Choose War Against Iran
So this is why I reluctantly believe today that Bush will indeed launch an attack on Iran before the expiration of his term of office:
...................
..............................

7. Adding up all those factors, it seems clear to me that Bush has laid out the following course for American policy, adding up to a Catch-22 from which I see no escape:

a. Continuing futile efforts to achieve Iranian capitulation through weak and ineffective economic sanctions, to the accompaniment of counterproductive vituperation and bombast;

b. Quickly followed by a period of rapidly escalating threats of military action, during which international and domestic opposition to American policy will increase dramatically, making Bush’s choices increasingly more painful and difficult in every respect;

c. A judgment by Bush that the immediate risks and costs of preemptive military action against Iran are, in the final analysis, less formidable than the risks and costs of tolerating Iranian nuclear possession --- and the personal and national humiliation that would result from passive acceptance of that outcome.

d. Sometime before the end of his term, a massive air military attack on a wide range of carefully selected targets in Iran, in partnership with Israel, and against the advice of many of his advisers --- justified by the conviction that a nuclear Iran would pose an intolerable threat to American national security, firm in his faith that God agrees with him on that point, and certain that history will eventually recognize and properly appreciate his courageous and visionary leadership.

2. I think they want Israel to do it.
They know that if America does it that it'll really be too much for us and start a third world war, maybe. If Israel drops some bombs then flies away, well it's much more "manageable"

6. Given what just happened in/to Lebanon, I think you're
dreaming in colours. In most people's mind the US and Israel are intrinsically entwined. Any military action against Iran will be blamed on both no matter who actually drops the bombs.

Since the two veto holding members of the security council who are supporting Iran are China and Russia, the final outcome of all of this is beyond my guess. Interesting, if not reassuring, times indeed.

9. Look how little the ramifications for attacking Lebanon were
If the US did it to Iran you can be sure that there'd be huge attacks in Iraq on US personell.

12. I think the ramifications for attacking Lebanon will be
huge. Most countries don't immediately and indiscrimanetly bomb other countries, they bide their time, often try diplomatic solutions, but if these don't work, watch out.

Also, the only thing that both the US and Israel have left on the international stage, are superior fire power. That might work in the short run, but will backfire in the long run. And let's not forget that the US, and by extension Israel, are basically broke.

3. Is that your opinion too, kpete?
I wasn't sure if the first line was your opinion or just a quote from the article (until I looked at the article itself).

10. The two biggest reason he won't be able to do it,
Russia and China.

If he did, it would go nuclear and, well I don't even want to contemplate the consequences.

14. bush choose his sleeping partners a long time ago and
he is forced into being loyal.

bush has no intentions of bucking their wishes which is to get Iran like they did Iraq. bush is loyal to that crowd because he has followed their lead due to the fact that he has no idea what he is doing.

No doubt Iran's threats about nukes is serious, so why has this issue been ignored. They have no concept of diplomacy and ignore the concerns and plans that the Western world has proposed. Bombs away.
