10. Some Palestinians did
If you recall that long e-mail of people who were grieving all over the world, some Palestenians were in there, too.

Originally, the picture of Palestinians celebrating was thought to be debunked, but it turned out to be real.

4. Not quite
There were some Palestinian women in the street dancing and screaming. A handful. An Imam came along, told them they should be ashamed of themselves, and told them to go home. They did. That was the most common film clip seen at the time, and probably the one you're thinking of.

(Of course, with Repukes, they'd agree with your misunderstanding ...)

I just thought it would be funny that the footage would come from some old movie ... and 2001 A space odyssey came to mind ... sorry ...

Edited to add -

If I could have made a reference to "Footloose" with Kevin Bacon at the time, I would have ...

15. Well, I sensed that it might have come across other than as intended
Visually, though, I think it would be an effective joke. They could play a montage of historical and/or famous dance footage interspersed with the "real" footage of Arabs dancing on 9/11.

Maybe something like:

Fred & Ginger, cut to a flamenco dancer, cut to 2001 footage, cut to Bugs Bunny dancing, cut to the "real" footage, cut to some stripper gyrating on a pole, cut to Dubya and Laura dancing at his post-inauguration.

In context, it would be stripped of its potential Arabs/apes comparison but would retain its mocking tone.

17. Supposedly Assoc. Press had the footage;
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 12:17 PM by igil
part was leaked, but never officially released. The PA said to squelch it, the story goes. It was squelched. There was the usual kind of 'apology'--we apologize that this happened and you saw it, because it'll hurt our cause. Typical externalization of justice, the Russian proverb 'you're not a thief if you're not caught' in an Arab setting.

The images and footage were debunked, but the debunking was debunked.

23. AP still has the footage
It is copywritten so people just can't take it. The AP has a separate mideast bureau funded by many middle east countries. The deal with the AP affiliate media is you can use footage for an unlimited time for 2 weeks then copywrite license runs out and it has to be shown with permission (and payment) of AP. So if they don't want it out anymore it does not come out. That is why you don't see the footage anymore.

25. Found this:
http://groups.colgate.edu/aarislam/response.htm#Expressions%20of%20grief%20and%20sympathy%20in%20the%20Arab%20and%20Muslim%20world:

- The terrorist act was strongly condemned by every single Palestinian organization including Fatah, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Hamas, Workers Unions and Committees, Human Right organizations (AlHaq, Law, Palestine Center for Human Rights), student associations, municipalities, mosques and churches, etc.

- The US Consul General in Jerusalem reported that he has received a huge stack of faxes from Palestinians and Palestinian organizations expressing condolences, grief and solidarity. He himself was pained to see that the media chose to focus on the sensational images of a few Palestinians rejoicing.

- The Palestine Legislative Council condemned the terrorist attack on the United States and sent an urgent letter of condolences to Mr. J Dennis Hasterd, Speaker of the House of Representatives.

- Palestinians in East Jerusalem held a candle-light vigils on 12 and 14 September to express their grief and solidarity with the American families struck by this tragedy. Mr. Abdel Qader Al-Husseini, son of the late Palestinian leader Faisal Al-Husseini led one of the vigils.

- Jerusalem University students, along with the President of the University and the Deans of the various Faculties, began a blood donation drive in East Jerusalem. Students and professors went to hospitals in order to donate blood for the American victims who need it.

- The 1 million Palestinian students in the Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, stood five minutes in silence to express their solidarity with the hundreds of American children who have been struck by this strategy, which resembles in its shocking effects their daily sufferings. (see image to the right)

-In Iran, Tehran's main soccer stadium observed an unprecedented minute's silence in sympathy with the victims.

-Iran's Ayatollah Imami Kashani spoke of a catastrophic act of terrorism which could only be condemned by all Muslims, adding the whole world should mobilise against terrorism.

26. Some Palestinians were really celebrating in the streets
Arafat tried getting the tapes of it when he realized how it was looking to the people (Americans)who were sending aid to the Palestinians. As in, he realized it was turning into a PR disaster. He didn't succeed. I saw the tapes many times in those weeks following 9-11. Arafat then put out an announcement that people shouldn't so openly celebrate

28. Saudis banned it
Anyone celebrating was arrested. The royal family didn't want any negative publicity.

There was some some in some radical areas of Jordan. But again, it was shut down by water cannons pretty quick.

When you see people celebrating the death of 3,000 innocent civilians, and those celebrations are beamed all over the world, if you are the government, you are going to want that shut down fast.

They were as upset about it as the rest of us, maybe moreso, because they feared what response might be directed their way.

37. I remember the TV footage that said Palestinians were
dancing in the streets. It was a bunch of children (and a very tight shot) who were whooping it up because someone was passing out candy and other sweets.
As a poster said upthread, it appeared to be something that was setup by western media.
