Questions about on-line registering to vote. I happened upon
congress.org by following a link. I saw a form to register to vote, which I thought I would fill out with my new address, and I would be all set. Well, it asked the registrant's political party. What!? My preference in political parties is confidential, I don't have to tell it to anyone! What is going on here, and will I be asked the same question if I register at the voting poll?

1. You don't have to tell unless you want to vote in primaries.

2. A paper registration form will ask you the same question.
Declaring your political party will allow you to vote in the primaries.

You are not required to declare a party - many people do not. However, if you do not declare a party, you cannot vote in any primary elections, and must wait until the general.

3. Thanks for the replies. I just didn't want to put this info on the
internet...call me paranoid, but you never know who is going to use this kind of info for their own purposes!
