3. I just got off the phone
With some people in the restaurant biz in Nawlins for a story I'm working on. Things are marginally better now, but there has been almost no money put into returning a bunch of agricultural type businesses, particularly in seafood, and nothing has really been done to prevent another Katrina. The anniversary is almost here, and I think Smirkie is going to get even more lumps for the lack of progress. If this had happened to, say, Houston or Miami, you bet the gummint would have been all over it. I remember after Andrew, I was in Miami and went down to Homestead. The place was buzzing with FEMA people...guess the victims were the right color.

4. I know, and the brass-plated nerve of telling people
to have patience with reconstruction of one of America's most beautiful cities is not ever going to go over. Has any other president been this utterly incompetent? It's really horrifying.

5. reconstruction is only going to occur as it's needed

Yes the adminstration has fouled everything up on their end, but New Orleans doesn't need reconstruction for a city of 500,000 when it's looking like it's going to be a city of 170,000 for quite some time.

13. are they being deliberately vague on this?
i have checked around but i still don't know the answer

perhaps there are security reasons for keeping the planned visit lower profile

i'm sure plenty would turn out to protest if they knew where he would be

14. Agreed. I'm also sure that a few wealthy republicans
know exactly when he will be in town and what party (fund raiser) he will be attending. Pathetic.

12. about andrew
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 01:51 PM by pitohui
actually they say the reason that poppy bush did not win a second term was because of the shameful and delayed help the people of florida received from fema after andrew -- thus handing florida over to bill clinton, a relative unknown at the time -- my suspicion is the guilt poppy feels for andrew is the reason he has decided to take natural disasters as his "cause" in recent years

andrew was the horror story of gov't callousness of its day, we've just forgotten because we've been hit by so many GOP horror stories

the victims of katrina in lower plaquemines parish who can't get their shrimp boats back into the sea are, to my knowledge, white or vietnamese

*co don't just hate blacks, he hates all working people

my husband just had a call in lower plaquemines parish for i think a drilling mud facility, the place is uninhabitable by families, workers live in trailers but the neighborhoods and towns are gone

the shrimp boat family is way down on the list to get help compared to the family where one or more works in the drilling mud plants, etc -- heavy industry has been able to call in chips and get trailers where individual shrimpers can't

the shrimpers who can get back on the water are finding that the shrimp have been reproducing madly and the local shrimp are much larger this year, so there is profit to be had there, if only more people were given a little help to replace boats/housing and get back to work

15. His obvious contempt for working people knows no bounds.
Do you remember his pitiful answer to that one woman who had to hold down three jobs? and his answer was "good for you!"

Disgusting.
