Buchanan: Hispanics Not Assimilating Into America Because They Like Rap
Buchanan: Hispanic Immigrants Not Assimilating Into America Because They Embrace ‘Rap Culture’

The media is lavishing attention on Pat Buchanan and his new book that argues that whites are the only race with the “genetic endowments” to prevent America from collapsing.

Yesterday on Hannity and Colmes, Pat Buchanan asserted that Hispanic immigrants were “not assimilated into America” because they were adopting “rap culture.”

Rap music, according to the U.S. State Department, is “an original American art form.” It has its roots, however, in African-American culture, not white culture. For Buchanan, apparently, that means it’s un-American...

2. Who said they had to assimilate?
"rap culture" as opposed to what? American culture? What's that?

4. Melt into the pot
Instead of calling themselves Americans and being proud of it, they simply call themselves "Mexicans north of the border."

According to a poll, over 60% of Mexicans believe the southwest United States should be returned to Mexico because it was taken away illegally.

They also are not learning english.

When in our history have immigrants come to America and then claim parts of it for their own home country? That's never happened before.

8. Again, who said they had to assimilate?
You said: "they simply call themselves "Mexicans north of the border." But, that's what they are.

"Mexicans believe the southwest United States should be returned to Mexico" An opinion. Heck, I agree with it, and from the looks of it, by 2050, with massive immigration as it is, it will be done anyhow.

"They also are not learning english." They don't have to.

10. That's just stupid
Agree with them with what? There was a war, they lost, they are lucky they didn't lose their entire. Which at this we should have done because we wouldn't be having this problem we have today.

And no, we are not going to give away 20% of the United States, including the biggest shipping port in North America, to Mexicans just because they don't like the outcome of a war that was fought over 160 years ago.

And yes, if they ever want to do a job other than pick fruit for 16 hours a day for $5 an hour, they MUST learn English. It is wrong to force our society to learn spanish just for them.

19. jerry611, when this country was founded...
a significant portion of this country spoke only German. That includes the people who fought in the Revolutionary War.

A significant portion continued to speak German, even in public institutions, up until WWI.

Why is it the people who claim to be so proud of America and tell other Americans what they can and can't do, don't know shit about American history?

25. Because you might get kooties.
There was a war. Many of the leaders you now revere like LINCOLN and GRANT thought that first war of aggression was just plain evil.

But, hey, it was 160 years ago.

18. They are learning English
The second generation tends to be bilingual, and the third generation tends to be primarily or even only English-speaking. They've followed the same pattern as every other immigrant population.

7. Whose to say they don't?
Waltzes, polkas, and other ethnic dances from Europe were widely integrated into "Mexican" music. Sometimes not with much difference to what makes them waltzes or polkas.

I loved the polkas that the workmen across the road used to play when building the housing development. I'm sorry ... the "nortena music", not the "polkas". Would never think of assuming that Mexican music wasn't purely indigenous.

sorry. next time I'll break out the sarcasm 2X4.

I love traditional Mexican music. I come from near the border and was raised on a mix of traditional Mexican, Tejano and American country. Great music.

17. To be perfectly honest...
To be perfectly honest, I'd rather hear traditional Hispanic music coming in through my windows any day of the week as opposed to the trendy, Top-40, angst-ridden jokes of music played on the radio these days.

I'd rather eat Mexican food than at McDonalds. I'd rather watch a Mexican soap opera than Jerry Springer. I'd rather date my currrent g/f (a Latino w/ broken English) than Paris Hilton.

Guess I'm just a piss-poor American...

:)

No, they're not assimilating BUT
Their kids are. That's how it works with immigrants (legal or not). My Polish ancestors didn't speak English when they came here. Italians just off the boat didn't either nor did Germans, etc. They found the different enclaves in the city where their fellow country men had settled and moved there and eked out a living for their kids, who did learn English.

This is anecdotal, but I live in Tulsa, which is getting heavily Mexican. Within five miles of my house, I can go to at least 2 dozen REAL Mexican restaurants, go dance salsa at a discoteca, go to a Mexican bakery, go to a Mexican butcher, or go shopping in a Mexican market that is in a re-furbished bowling alley. I'm a parttime entertainer - magic and balloon twisting, and the vast majority of my childrens' birthday parties are for the Mexican community. The adults call me because they can hire me in Spanish, but when I get to the party, 95% of the kids speak both Spanish and English.

23. Like Rock and Roll didn't arise from the Blues! What is the lesson
of rap? What does it tell humanity? That it is important to know the "words" and not just the "music"? And why does that threaten Orweillians so much? That kids are listening hard to lyrics & poetry? Might they just be... more discerning? Perhaps they have a narrative of their own? All this, why would it scare the establishment?

I just can't think?:sarcasm:
