The article did not have a picture of the sketch.
The article did not describe the length of the braids.
The article does not explain why there is only one sketch, and not two, of the suspects.
Does this change your impression(s) regarding whether the Sheriff's original statements were unconstitutional racial profiling?
Snip from todays article:
"Detectives Tuesday released a sketch of one of the two gunmen who killed four people nearly two months ago in a drug-related, execution-style shooting near Slidell.
. . . .
The sketch represents the first detailed information released so far about either suspect, who had previously been described as young black men, one with dreadlocks and the other with a "chee wee" hairstyle.
The vague descriptions became the source of controversy two days after the shootings when Strain said in a TV interview that anyone walking the streets with such hairstyles could "expect to be getting a visit from a sheriff's deputy."
The statement drew a sharp rebuke from the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union, which accused Strain of engaging in unconstitutional racial profiling. Strain has refused to back down, and the U.S. Justice Department has assigned a mediator to try to resolve the dispute.
Based on descriptions from two witnesses who survived the carnage, the sketch depicts a black man with a thin mustache and braided hair.
Asked whether it shows the suspect with dreadlocks or the one with chee wees, Strain said, "We were betting whether anyone would ask that. Not being (hairstylists), we believe this is the chee wee hairstyle." "
