What would it take and who might take the initiative to impeach Bush and Cheney?
The conceptual problems which I envision include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Many (most?) Americans believe that open criticism of leadership in front of others (ie the rest of the world) is bad behaviour. I have observed this kind of 'closing of ranks' in corporate life and there is no reason to believe it would be different in a national or international political context.
- Many Americans believe that challenging or criticising the leadership in time of war is unacceptable, and probably unpatriotic.
- Even among those Americans who are critical of the Bush administration many would rather grit their teeth rather than admit to the world at large, especially the Muslim world (and maybe the French too), that America has got it wrong and had been led by (at best) liars and misguided souls.
- Many Americans don't care enough about the issue to have a strong opinion.
- Many Americans unquestionably support Bush, his administration and the war in Iraq. Admittedly, based on the latest polls, that number is the smallest it has been since the war was started but it is still a large number of people.
From all that I see and hear and read there is more than enough evidence to make a very compelling case for impeachment. The consequences of the actions of this administration so totally and utterly dwarf Clinton's indiscretions and dishonesty and yet, in this case, no-one has seen fit to even try to run with it.
How do you account for that?
