53. PBS
shows what they want minus the language. The images from this tragedy are enough. Cussing doesn't make anymore of an impact than the images and video do. People saying "fuck you, Cheney," doesn't add to anything. Show it on PBS, or release it straight to DVD...I don't care. Just make it available to more people if you actually care...Hell, let one of the "caring" studios make it free to the public on DVD or video...

57. What's meant by "move on?" It doesn't say why he didn't go there
right away. By his actions, he didn't care. He knew Katrina was bad before it happened. Video shows he was being told. He uses black people, but doesn't care about black people.

Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 09:20 PM by LibraLiz1973
What kind of person says that?

NO it doesn't show anything to substantiate her argument.
He's the fucking PRESIDENT (ok- we all know he wasn't elected BUT)
he's not supposed to be moving on- he's supposed to be doing his fucking job and helping.

One of the facts that was brought up last night was that in 1965 hurricane Betsy hit on September 9.
President Johnson was on the ground on September 10..... THE NEXT DAY. While there was still no power.

____________________________
In a somewhat impulsive, questionably dangerous, and rather extraordinary politically-driven decision, then President Lyndon Johnson flew Air Force One to New Orleans to view the destruction first hand only three hours after being asked to do so by Senator Russell Long of Louisiana and just one day after Betsy’s landfall. Indeed, Betsy was still blowing around Baton Rouge, Louisiana, preventing the President from going up there for a look see, as he had planned

Johnson’s experience during that visit is also recorded in his “Daily Diary”, as follows:

<5:36 p.m.Central Time Zone> “The members of the Presidential party had seen from the air a previews of the city—water over ¾ of the city up to the eaves of the homes, etc….and estensive damage to the harbors, etc. At this point, the party would move in to the city to see for first hand just how much damage had actually occured. The motorcade departed the airport—and the President and party motored into the City proper. At this point <5:40 p.m.>, the motorcade stopped, though the President did not get out of the car. Two schools were located on both sides of the street—that were being used as refugee centers. The motorcade stopped again on a bridge and this time did depart from the limousine. The press scouried around the President and members of his party as they looked over both sides of the bridge below at the water that had engulfed the neighborhoods. People were walking along the bridge where they had disembarked from the boats that had brought them to dry land. Many of the people were carrying the barest of their possessions and many of them had been sitting on top of their houses waiting for rescue squads to retrieve the families and carry them to dry land—and to food and water.

“The President stopped and talked w/some of them—among them a gentleman by the name of William Marshall—a 74 year old Negro man. The President asked him how he was and they chatted for while —the man leaving the President saying—“God bless you, Mr. President—God ever bless you.” The motorcade soon departed and returned into the city…enroute stopping at Washington High School on St. Claude’s Avenue. The President again left his car and walked into the building that was being used as a refugee center. Most of the people inside and outside of the building were Negro. At first, they did not belive that it was actually the President. He walked up steps leading in to the school and the only light was that of a few flashlights lighting the way for him.

“The President would stop and talk w/ a few of them in the school…It was a mass of human suffering. They were crowded into the school w/their families gathered around them. Calls of “water-water-water” were resourced over and over again in terribly emotional wails from voices of all ages. The President left the building and in front of it, called for Hon. Buford Ellington to come to him and asked him to send water to them immediately. He also suggested to the Mayor Victor Schiro that the soft drink companies in New Orleans make available the bottled soft drinks (since the water had to be boiled- and not electricity was available—contamination could set in.) The Mayor agreed to check into the possibilities of this.

The thing about Bush is that he's turned his voters into a bunch of idiots.
They are always in the position of having to make excuses for him- like a bad child. They know he's in the wrong, they are just to ashamed and to ASLEEP to admit it.
It just contributes more to the dumbing down of America.

55. I volunteer with a group
that travels around the country all summer (drum corps) and we sleep in schools on their gym floor. When I see what America lets their children spend 7 hours of the day in every year I am amazed. I have seen schools where we had to cover ourselves with sheets to keep the cockroaches from making into our sleeping bags (NY) and where pieces of the ceiling tile fell on you at night (Georgia). I even asked a janitor if they were renovating and he just laughed. We talk a lot in this country about caring about kids.....we do not care or we would fund schools (OURS) at least as well as we have promised to fund Iraq. Again another shame on America.

128. I cried during both nights for the first time in a long time...
especially when a man (I think his name was Terence Blanchard) described how his father was treated by the insurance agent and how important owning that home had been. And how post-Katrina his father, who'd worked tirelessly for decades and paid his premiums like everyone else, got nothing, just nothing. That was hearbreaking, as were so many of the stories.

But mostly, I felt unmitigated rage for all two hours, clenching my fists in rage at how these people were treated.

84. You know I've had freepers say
that in other disasters people didn't wait for help they helped themselves. In the case of Katrina the government actually prevented people from helping themselves. So many people could have been employed cleaning up rather than hiring contractors. They sent them away and didn't let them home to help. This administration operates just like the Soprano family. Every time I see anything about Katrina I remember the Soprano's sitting at a work site doing nothing but sitting under umbrellas waiting to get paid. The administration is a crime family, I'm sure of it.

remember contractors were hired to feed the people there. With the cooks and cooking that goes on in N.O., locals weren't hired, but contracted out. I believe that was the why * cancelled the Davis-Bacon act. So that outside contractors could charge more.

101. Insurance companies have preemptively been canceling
policies all over Cape Cod. They are telling the home owners that they are in a low flood plane and could be wiped out by a hurricane and are canceling them outright.

Once one company cancels you, it's damn near impossible to find another company to cover you too.

103. Yes
It is ridiculous that hurricane insurance doesn't cover floods, when floods are a part of a hurricane. Even more ridiculous is that you can only make a claim against hurricane insurance once, much like homeowner's insurance. Yet, if you live in an area prone to hurricanes, you are required by law to have hurricane insurance.

now if everyone gets to see this. Is this the country and government we want, a government who does not take care of its' people, shameful, no one NO ONE should go through what those people had to endure in the Gulf States. No one should be left without a home and no help or no hope. Katrina is a wound that will take years to heal.

I don't know what to say, I was tearful and angry watching this documentary for what this government has done to these people and their lives.

124. Spike Lee has created a marvelous documentary. It's about people.
The Republicans don't get it. They just don't get it because they have no feeling for people. They are completely unempathic. It's practically a requirement to join the GOP.

They don't empathize with the Lebanese people. They don't empathize with the Iraqi people. They don't empathize with the citizens of their own country losing homes, history, family, jobs, neigborhoods, churches, culture--everything--and then being treated like nothing more than a nuisance by their own government.

I'm so glad Spike Lee included that comment from Barbara Bush. That has to stand as one of the most unempathic things I've ever heard. No wonder Bushie boy is such a POS. What a pathetic excuse for a mother.
