"The rapture" that is. And a concept I'd never actually even heard of until I was a teenager. I guess I had been pretty well sheltered from most of the uglier aspects of religion, because I was seriously disturbed that anyone would be bloodthirsty enough to believe that kind of stuff.
Older and wiser, I now think these people's god may be playing a bit of a joke at their expense. The fundies (of many religions, not just Christians) suffer through life, thinking that their cruel attitudes and behaviors will win them god's favor, and then god will suck them up into the sky... presumably into Heaven. But what will happen on Earth when the hijackers and Pat Robertsons and gay-bashers and gross consumers and polluters and manifest destinators have all disappeared? Heaven! Looks a whole lot like we savages get the sweet end of the deal.
