Where do the Dems stand on globalization/privatization?
Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 07:16 PM by Dover
I realize there is a split within the Dem Party about these issues. But just generally, where do they stand?

How much of what the GOP has done toward the privatization of domestic and foreign resources, government agencies and policy would be UN-done by the Dems when/if they take office? Afterall, it was Clinton who helped NAFTA along (though that's not what this question is about). What about things like the IMF and trade policies? What about joining a world court and establishing global institutions of law? I'm concerned about how the Dems are visualizing the future of our country, it's government (which admittedly needs to adapt to a changing world) and global relationships. I want to know the big picture....to see the forest for the trees. What direction would they take us?

Also curious what their position would be on things that have been put in place by the GOP like:

* Patriot Act
* Privatization of the military
* The Bush Doctrine and Pre-emption http://www.twq.com/03spring/docs/03spring_heisbourg.pdf#search=%22Bush%20Doctrine%22
* Middle Eastern and other foreign policy
* De-regulation of various industries
* Emissions and Energy Policy such as the expansion of Nuclear Energy
* IRS privatization and other moves toward privatization of various government tasks
* Diminishing State's Rights
* Public Education vs. Private
* Etc.

I'm surprised I'm not more clear about where they stand on these things, aren't you?
Would the corporations that have gained so much influence within our government like to see the whole thing dismembered and privatized?

1. They try to vote for it without us seeing. BUT WE DO!

2. Vote for what? Can you give examples?
I seem to recall being disappointed in their vote on emissions a few years back, but don't recall the details now.

3. Given the hurt it has done to the economy and national security of late,
it's got to end.

With China now being looked at by countries the US openly opposes, it's got to realize that by allowing offshoring, it has done itself a huge disservice. Those same countries would have otherwise come begging to us. Not making bilateral and other delicious deals with countries that are known to otherwise not be our friends.

Globalization without rememebering the national part has led to what could become a big-ass disaster.

Even the GOP, most of which still talk about making America better again, surely have got to agree with this as well.

4. I think there's a gulf in the party over Globalization
Privitization isn't as loaded - it would depend on the circumstances, I would guess.

Privization of the military? Who's talking about that?

Democrats are opposed to the Bush Doctrine and Preemption now (but not so much in 2002-2003). They question the patriot act but also see some value in it. They generally agree with COnservatives that Israel is our most importan ally in the middle east, but disagree on whether or not we should follow a peace process or just kill 'em. They generally oppose de-regulation. They produce almost as many noxious emissions as the Republicans, particularly around chili time. I don't know what you mean by IRS privitization. The opposed social security privitization and the phase out.

But of course, you can find prominent democrats on each side of each issue, almost.

6. Privatization of Military and IRS
Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 07:00 PM by Dover
Though I think the GOP (ie. their corporate backers) want to privatize many aspects of the military for their own interests, so far they are mainly privatizing by using mercenaries and soldiers trained by private companies like Blackwater and services by companies like Halliburton.

As far as privatizing the IRS goes, this is hot off the press:

They'd also like to completely privatize the U.S. Mail, and many, many other government agencies.

5. The party bosses were hoping you wouldn't ask them about that
because the CONSERVATIVES in charge of the party right now are completely for globalization and privatization and screwing the rest of us.

That's why they're out of power. We noticed.

7. Privatization of the military is a major problem because so many jobs have
been converted from military/civil service to contractor.

I believe the only military jobs that have not yet been contracted out are direct operational jobs such as combat arms, flight crews, ship crews, etc.
