Khatami, a reformist cleric who was Iran’s president from 1997 to 2005, would be the most senior Iranian to visit the United States since Washington broke off diplomatic relations following the Islamic revolution and takeover of the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.
He has been invited to speak next month on “understanding between civilizations and cultures” at the Washington National Cathedral, the event organizer, Reverend Canon John Peterson of the cathedral’s Center for Global Justice and Reconciliation, told AFP.
A State Department spokesman said Khatami had not yet applied for a visa and declined to comment on whether one would be issued to the former Iranian leader.
