Conservatives Try to Curtail Hotel Porn
Conservatives Try to Curtail Hotel Porn

By DAVID CRARY AP National Writer

August 22,2006 | NEW YORK -- Pornographic movies now seem nearly as pervasive in America's hotel rooms as tiny shampoo bottles, and the lodging industry shows little concern as conservative activists rev up a protest campaign aimed at triggering a federal crackdown.

A coalition of 13 conservative groups -- including the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America -- took out full-page ads in some editions of USA Today earlier this month urging the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether some of the pay-per-view movies widely available in hotels violate federal and state obscenity laws.

The coalition also is trying to draw attention to CleanHotels.com, a directory of hotels and motels nationwide that pledge to exclude adult offerings from their in-room entertainment service.

SNIP

The leader of the campaign against in-room porn is Phil Burress, a self-described former porn addict who heads the Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values.

So, in answer to those who would tell these people, "just don't watch it," the answer is they can't do that; they're "porn addicts" and because they are powerless to make that choice no one else should be allowed the choice, either.

8. A porn addict
will get there porn regardless of what the religiously insane attempt to do. Just another attempt to destroy the constitution and replace it with the bible. Sick motherfuckers who could do so much good in the name of Jesus Christ instead of spending their lives hating.

I thank God the motherfuckers like bacon cheeseburgers and Shrimp Poboys.

10. I think going after porn would be the RR's last mistake.
Going after gays doesn't bother most people because they aren't gay themselves. Going after abortion doesn't bother most people because they have good birth control. Going after porn on the other hand is a whole different ball game. Not only do the majority of people have porn of some fashion, but it is also a multi-billion dollar business. You would not only have hordes of people with health sex lives seeking release up in arms but also big business.

They will have to take our porn from our cold dead, but well lotioned, hands.

There are a number of conservative hotel chain owners who give to the GOP. They choose to have porn there. Marriott comes to mind.

21. Hmmm, might be fun to picket them and pretend to be fundies
The profit margin on movies as a whole, and adult ones in particular, is enormous. They lose money on their food and booze operations, but movies are almost pure gravy. They will never let that profit center go, and it would be fun to embarass the shit out of them.

That is why this country is collapsing like a sandcastle at high tide. Instead of putting energy into fighting what really ails us - wars, deficits, melting ice caps, corrupted elections - these freaks obsess about Jenna Jameson being available on the On Command at the Marriott. Gawd I'm sick of this B.S.

31. Burress wants society to function as his frontal lobes.
Lotsa people like him in the extreme RR. They treat religion and churches as 12 step programs. And churches are all too often happy to do this. The problem is when the fine line between parishioner and client breaks down along with the line between church and state. Dual roles and dueling philosophies and we all lose.

I'm not a fan of porn and believe it exploits people all around. But this opens a door to another obscenity--the intrusion of the state into private spaces.

33. They haven't got a prayer - this stuff makes money
for the hotels and Mammon is American's one true god. Mess with something that earns money and watch Jesus get hit in the back of the head with a black jack and left in a ditch.

And good god is the lure of silicon breasts that hard to resist? And hell even if you are an "addict" like all addicts you have a choice Don't take the drink, don't shoot the smack, And don't watch Debbie does Dallas XIV - the revenge. Addiction is no damn excuse. And really if the power of Jesus is not enough help for you to overcome the lure of an all girl three way - maybe you'd be better off with another god?

Man do they ever get their panties in a twist about teh sex.

34. We should encourage this as much as we can.
Let's make sure the Religious Right crusade against porn is trumpeted from the rooftops, and let's take every opportunity we can to conflate this effort with the Republican party. When Joe Average realizes that the Republicans want to take his porn away, he'll drop them like a ton of bricks.
