Singling Out Muslim Air Passengers: Latest Republican Campaign Issue?
Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 11:15 AM by BurtWorm
Howard Dean was right: It is the party of white Christian people. :eyes:

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2006/08/21/latest-republican-campaign-issue/

A congressional candidate in Florida has become the third Republican office-seeker to call for heightened screening of Muslim airline passengers since the foiling of an airline bombing plot in Britain. “It is a fact that over the past 34 years, starting with the Munich Olympics, the majority of terrorist attacks have been carried out by Muslims,” said Mark Flanagan, a candidate in the 13th District of Florida, in a statement released this morning.

Flanagan said he was the only congressional candidate calling for profiling of Muslim passengers. But Paul Nelson, a Republican running in the third district of Wisconsin, endorsed the idea last week on a local radio show. Asked on the show how screeners would spot a Muslim male, Nelson said, “If he comes in wearing a turban and his name is Muhammad, that’s a good start,” according to the Associated Press.

New York gubernatorial candidate John Faso also has supported profiling, saying, “If a 25-year-old Muslim man who has been traveling frequently to Yemen or Pakistan tries to board a plane, then not only statistical analysis but also common sense tells us that he is more of a potential threat than the grandmother from Queens.”

David Johnson, Flanagan’s political consultant, said that under the proposal, passengers who appear to be Arab or Muslim would be pulled out of security lines for additional screening. In an interview, Flanagan declined to say how screeners would determine which passengers met that description, or whether black Muslim and Christian Arab passengers also should be subject to heightened security measures. “Those questions are premature, albeit very important,” he said. –Ben Winograd

1. Al-Qaeda can easily fix that:
They'll have their suiciders dye their hair, wear jeans, and call themselves Joe (insert Hispanic/Italian/Greek last name).

2. Or They Can Recruit Chechen Extremists
Who, BTW live in the Caucasus mountains so are actual-factual Caucasians. Hey, it worked with the Black Widows who sabotaged a Russian jet.

3. There was a disgruntled ex-employee who took over a plane
with a gun once, in California. It was back in the 80s. He was able to get on the plane with the gun because he didn't have to go through the metal detector because he was an employee (probably changed since then so employees have to go through it now). He took over the plane and crashed it, killing himself and everyone on board.

Anybody can do something crazy. It amazes me how we assume only Muslims can do that. The 25 year old from Pakistan might not be crazy where the old grandmother is. There's no way to know.

And it gets annoying that people have to assume this about Muslims. It is just stupid. Stop the Muslims there might be reason to stop, sure, but acting like most of them are a threat is ridiculous.

I do know some Arabs who actually sympathize, though, and don't mind going through some extra stuff in the name of protecting America. Which proves my point right there.

7. Ethnicity has nothing to do with it. Nor does clothing. Or appearance.
Spot the Muslim; spot the terrorist; which ones are, and which ones aren't:

It is naive in the extreme to think you can tell who is Muslim by their Colteresque "swarthiness." It's also a bit racist, though that may not be intentional. It's also no guarantee that if the person is from "the Middle East" that they must be Muslim. The Coptic Christians, Maronites and so forth might take umbrage at that assumption.

8. This amounts to "Don't bother the white people"
First of all, it would not be hard for a potential terrorist to simply shave off their beard, and throw on some jeans and a t-shirt. This would mean that airport security would have to be able to pick out a Muslim by sight. This would mean that they would probably target arabs, but how can you be sure who is an arab and who's not. This means that you target anyone with darker skin. But wait, there is also a huge Muslim population in Indonesia, better stop all the Asians too. Oh, and there are black Muslims too. Somebody has to keep them off the plane also.

And the slippery slope get even more slippery.
