Wonderful economy we are living in

Last week I went to apply at a new GFS (Gordon Food Service)marketplace store opening near me, they had an open application session at a hotel. I need a part-time or full-time job to go along with going to college and not alot of places want to work around my schedule (9am-1pm Mon-thurs) which isn't that bad to work around. So I go inside the hotel and at first I thought it must of been a convention of some sorts going on because the lobby is full of people (50-60). I get my application from one of the representatives from the company and go fill it out, as I go to find a place to sit I see all of these people are also filling out applications. I get mine filled out in 15 minutes and I turn it in, the company rep ask if I can stay awhile to have an interview and I ask how long the wait, she says 2 1/2 hours, which they only had the session opened for another hour and a half. I ask since their having this session the next day as well could I come in the morning to get interviewed, she says yes but if I don't what to wait long come right when they start back up in the morning. I ask if it's been this busy all day and she tells me this is the least amount of people that have been in the lobby all day. So the next day I come in at a 9am and after about a 45 minute wait I get interviewed, The all of the people from this company seemed sincere, there seemed to be about 6-7 people conducting interviews and the guy that interviewed me was cool and I think it went well. The position that was open was for stock and they had 25 openings to fill, I'm just estimating but I'd say they easily had over 500 people from all walks of life that applied over the 2 days of interview. I haven't heard anything yet and I would be surprised if I did, not because I'm not qualified but just because of the number of applicants. The pay is $6.50 - $8.00 dollars an hour not the greatest pay, but it's 5 minutes from my place so that would really lower my monthly gas use. I am not making this post to bitch, complain, or get sympathy from this story, I just want to show an example of how scarce new jobs and how bad the economy are that over 500 people are competing for 25 jobs that at the most they will make $8.00 an hour. Every time I hear a repuke tool on TV or some idiot in general say the economy is strong, I want slap them across their ear till it's red.

There are some god jobs out there such as Pharmacy tech and require only a few months of classes and start at around $30-35,000/year.

A college degree means very little without the right connections. I struck out on my own, and even if it's hard, I don't have to answer to a corporate whoremaster.

Small businesses like mine employ 80 - 90% of all non-governmental workers in the U.S., and we can choose our own fates. I only employ two workers, but I pay them well. I HATE large corporations and the "Wal-Marting" of America, but unfortunately those large corporations control our political process. Small businesses have very little say in the process (if we did, a national health-care plan would have been instituted years ago).

I wish you well. I worked as a stocker in a family owned grocery store during high school(it's now out of business - another victim of Wal-Mart), and I loved it. I miss it sometimes, even if I don't miss the pay checks ($3.35/hr).

When repukes say that the economy is great they're really saying that it is great for the corporations and wealthy individuals who control the riches of our labor. The average worker is working two jobs to keep his or her family's chin just barely above the poverty line.

4. They opened a new Lowe's near me in April. I put in an application.

They hired 180 people, but had tons of applicants. Part-time was all that was left when I got there. $8.50 an hour. Couldn't pay any bills with that, but it was work and kept me busy. It was a very physical job. Not the kind of work a desk-sitter of 25 years should take. I'd get home and couldn't even walk. When they opened, they were still looking for workers. After 2 months over half had quit or gotten fired (myself included). Now business is bad( I can't figure that out since the economy is so good), so there is a hiring freeze. They are sending people home from work if there are no customers and calling workers to stay home.

Some of the workers there were from a Target where they said the working conditions are worse. I found out during my 2 years of unemployment there are a lot of crappy jobs out there. And it's going to get worse.

5. I'm here in Anderson...

I hear ya on the economy. We are getting a Hershey's factory here soon and I'm sure we'll have the same flocks of people looking for a few dozen jobs. I'm working three part time jobs to pay my mortgage and stay in school...and still having to use student loan money to survive...and total, I'm doing good to get 25 hours of work a week. I've had to be creative- my newest job is demonstrating pet food. At least the pay in two of my jobs is $10 an hour. It's absolutely insane. And I'm 25 years old with a double bachelors and speak fluent Spanish!!! By the way, if you want some part time work demonstrating pet food, let me know. I can try to get you a position. I'm pretty sure we still need people in the Indy area.
