And every time I switched back to CNN, it was wall-to-wall coverage of you-know-what. Yes, there seems to be a development in a decade-old homicide case -- and yes, I think it's good that there's going to be official involvement, to settle the question of whether he did it or not. And of course I support any investigation that would exonerate the innocent and confront the guilty.

But 24-hour coverage for several days running?

There was the poor old CBC, with its nerdy presenters, and earnest documentary follow-up pieces about pharmaceutical biochemistry and African infrastructure. You could practically sense them looking over at the big cable networks sort of apprehensively ("have we still got an audience?") -- the anchor had that expression on her face when she added towards the end of the news segment, "and in Thailand today ...".

It was obvious from the day that this story broke that this individual was a deluded psychotic, and yet in spite of that we had a Parade of Experts deluge us with reasons why we should pay attention to this pathetic specimen of humanity.
