Bush Warns It Would Be 'Disaster' to Leave Iraq

By Daniela Deane
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 21, 2006; 4:26 PM

President Bush said Monday the United States would lose "our soul as a nation" if it gave up on the Iraq war now, warning it would be a "disaster" if U.S. troops left before the new Iraqi government can control the country.

"We're not leaving so long as I'm president," an animated Bush said in a wide-ranging White House press conference. "That would be a huge mistake." He conceded, though, that the war was "straining the psyche of our country" with U.S. deaths now standing at more than 2,600.

At the long and varied news conference, an energetic Bush also called for a rapid deployment of the U.N.-mandated international force for southern Lebanon, saying the "need is urgent," and answered questions about Iran's nuclear program, high gas prices and the lack of progress in rebuilding New Orleans one year after Hurricane Katrina.

Bush made his comments as support for the Iraq war among the American public continues to plummet and Bush's approval numbers stay stuck in the 30s. More conservative commentators are raising questions, expressing doubts or even attacking the president outright on his foreign policy decisions, with the Iraq war figuring prominently. Republican candidates have also been distancing themselves from Bush as mid-term elections near and in some contests the war has become a central issue.

1. Coming from a man who's soul, I thoroughly believe, is headed for
the lowest place in hell, who is he to judge anyone or any country's morality?

2. America has no soul, and it never did
Fuck Bush and the high-horse he rode in on. He doesn't even know a damn what ordinary people have to live through in his world.

3. Translation:
If we leave Iraq the country could re-stabilize itself and it could become a lot harder to get at their oil.

5. He called it a crusade years ago, now this
he really seems to see this as some kind of Holy War. 'We're all going to hell if we don't continue the occupation' ?

What happened to 'blessed are the peacemakers'?

6. Americans have perpetrated torture,
mass murder of civilians, rape, and countless other atrocities in Iraq that have not yet come to light, and this lying, war-profiteering miscreant has the temerity to say that we would lose "our soul as a nation" if we stopped this travesty?!

8. Jay-sus. I smell desparation.
Like Bush would even know what a soul is, or ANYTHING about what America is about. The """""soul"""" of America is The Constitution, which he is systematically destroying. He's the quintessential treasonous anti-American. That article makes me want to start saying bad words again. :( I just never thought I'd see the day when a world leader equated NOT killing people as immoral. Sh*t!

9. Orwellian double-speak
Bush is pandering to the christian moron base, who get their news from Fox TV and Radio Limbaugh ilk. They actually believe this Orwellian shit.

We pulled out of Vietnam, losing that war, and regained a bit of soul with Jimmy Carter. Unhappy about losing both the war and the election, the warhawks upended the economy (oh yes they did), cranked up the war machine and put a war president back in office in 1980.

George Walker Bush is the worst President* in US history, bar NONE!

*Not actually elected to office in 2000, unsure if elected in 2004.

16. It may hurt America's "football mentality" if we lose the contest....
but here's a way we can win back our integrity and save face in the court of worldwide opinion:

Expose the lies that got us into the war in the first place and prosecute the perpetrators to the fullest extent of international law. This would prove that America remains a land of justice.

18. As an American, the soul of America is not in Iraq, nor anywhere in the
Middle East. The soul of America is in our great experiment in democracy and lives in the US Constitution. And George W. Bush and cohorts are trampling it in the dust.

he looks increasingly unhinged. No one in their right mind believes this horseshit. He is desperate and he looks and talks like it.
