Video:Bush: We Never...
During a long, wandering answer about his administration's rationale for the Iraq War during his press conference today, President Bush asserted that "nobody's ever suggested in this administration that Saddam Hussein ordered the attacks."

Here's the video:

That's technically true -- but distorts the truth. In fact, his administration has repeatedly asserted the falsehood that Saddam was somehow involved with the 9/11 attacks.

That's undeniable. As Josh noted back in November, Vice President Cheney did suggest on numerous occasions, most notably on Meet the Press in September, 2002, that Iraq might have been involved in the attacks:

Also, someone ought to count how many times 9/11 & Saddam were used in the same sentence by the chimp &
the chimp minions. The intent was 100%.

5. Think Progress has more
As ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, Vice President Cheney cited “evidence” cooked up by Douglas Feith and others to claim it was “pretty well confirmed” that Iraq had contacts with 9/11 hijackers.

More generally, in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, the administration encouraged the false impression that Saddam had a role in 9/11. Bush never stated then, as he does now, that Iraq had “nothing” to do with 9/11. Only after the Iraq war began did Bush candidly acknowledge that Iraq was not operationally linked to 9/11.
