1. McCain tells a monkey joke...
Is this what is known as playing to your base? THe Repugs seem to pride themselves on having ignorant, bigotted twits in their base. Must make it soo much eaiser for them to rally the voters. No need to take the time to be thoughtful and articulate - just go for the dumb, bigotted humor and you've done your job.

9. Or McCain is stabbing Allen in the back
Allen deserves everything he gets on this. (Kerry's statement is great.)

McCain is in VA to "help" Allen, but he and Allen may be rivals in 2008. It cna't be just a co-incidence he told a monkey story. McCain is not known to be a super Allen friend.

10. McCain is an opportunistic shill
I guess he knows his audience. Just wonder which one he was playing to this time.

Maybe McCain is fanning the flames a bit here? Maybe McCain wants Allen to lose? Then he won't have to deal with him in that pesky primary.

2. the best read on Allen's troubles was on The Daily Show
when they said it made him sound racist and it is undetermined whether that hurts him or helps him in VA.

Sad but probably true.

3. "Macaca" is only the tip of the racist iceberg and
Times Dispatch Writer Peter Hardin knows it. He's written about Allen's "race problem" but never come through with the kind of exhaustive, thoroughly researched piece Ryan Lizza wrote in the New Republic last April called "Pin Prick." Well worth reading.

Allen's racism is nothing new. It goes back to his days as a Southern California high school student when he sprayed racist graffiti on the school walls and continued into his adult life with a noose in his law office. He's obsessed with the Confederacy and has been for close to 40 years. When offered a walk-on in the Civil War movie, Gods and Generals, he chose to portray a Confederate General - and involved his son Forrest, named for Gen Nathan Forrest, early Grand Wizard of the KKK. Allen is a piece of work.

6. These Civil War buffs....
Who cares. The war is over and the south lost so get over it already. This past spring we had someone call work to see if we'd sponsor a Civil War re-enactment. This guy went on and on about it and "don't you know about the Civil War?!!" (gush, gush, we should be so thrilled, etc.). My co-worker listened to CW Buff and then said..."Well, who won?" Last week on CSPAN there was a program about Lincoln and a basement dweller caller said that Abe wasn't fit to shine Nathan Bedford Forrset's shoes. The host replied he doubted Abe would want to shine Nathan's shoes.

That Alan, he knew so well what he was saying.
