historical amnesia and our current "brown" problem
racist anti-MEXICAN/LATINO immigration types like to surreptiously insert comments about the inherent superiority of their european ancestors by claiming european immigrants assimilated "better."

they like to say that brown immigrants refuse to learn english. they complain that brown immigrants INSIST on speaking spanish and preserving their cultural identities.

what about the germans?

2. Pat Buchanan (Irish) is against immigration.
Did you catch him on Imus this morning?

I know there's a difference between legal and illegal immigration,
but it just sounded so flippin' weird.

6. I didn't hear him, but I heard Franken mention it.

He thinks this is a big plot by Mexico to send in their poor and uneducated so that Mexico can annex seven western states. :wtf:

That's even weird for Buchanan. I don't think Mexico would go up against our military, however, I wonder if other hostile nations might, since Bush as depleted our military strength and pretty much destroyed a lot of its infrastructure with witch hunts against brass who disagreed with him and installing inept sycophants in their place.

11. It's actually a big plot by the US
to get cheap labor and goods by putting pressure on Mexico and Latin America to sell products to us at unreasonably cheap rates.

The language argument is a convenient cover for racism.

The problem is the huge numbers of ILLEGAL immigrants, not which country they come from, or what color their skin is. The fact that many parts of the USA are now primarily Spanish-speaking areas is a whole separate issue, and I don't care if they want to speak Spanish instead of English, I only care that our country is being taken down and being replaced by one big-happy-country Canada-USA-Mexico and we all get to live with it whether we welcome it with open arms or not.

You don't want borders?? You dont want border control? You got nothing to bitch about, because the borders are wide open and you will get the brand-new country you want to see take America's place, and it is happening ***NOW.***

10. When my ancestors crossed the sea, it was much easier....
Show up at Ellis Island, pass the physical, you're IN! Of course, they had to work very hard & fight xenophobia--but things weren't that easy back in Ireland.

Perhaps YOUR country is being "taken down." Mine isn't.

9. Relying on memory, I recall
that 35% of Americans have German ancestry due immigration in the 1800's. There are states in which German dialects ARE STILL SPOKEN. TODAY. I took a German author to task as he bemoaned there were Little Italies, Chinatowns, etc. all over the U.S. clearly not realizing there were ENTIRE REGIONS settled by Germans, German Valley, Germantown, the Pennsylvania "Dutch" are of GERMAN ancestry. The connexion between Germany and America is very broad and VERY DEEP.

13. Sure.
The plurality of Americans today have German ancestry.

In fact, I think that 35% is roughly the same percentage as Revolutionary War troops who spoke German primarily.

Goes to show you how the people who claim the U.S.A. is for English speakers only don't really know much about their own country.

5. Hitler said about the same things about the Jews and Slavs.
Pick up "Mein Kampf" and read his racist diatribes against both groups. And they were white! Imagine what he would say about Mexicans. I wonder about those Nazis like Mengele who fled to South America to hide and how they felt about their host countries.

19. I know. But even in those little pockets of Alemanos (Germans)
they still eventually had to deal with the non-Germans who were running the countries they fled to. It must have stuck in their craws at times.

16. italians (southern ones at least)
were considered "untermenschen" by waspy types, too swarthy doncha know.

i've read that the racial epithet "spic" is a bastardization of "spig" an epithet used to describe italians at one time.

but who would disparage any italian now for seeking to preserve their cultural identity or to speak their language?

shit, hollywood has made millions of dollars because of the romanticization of italian-americans.

American beer need not apply. I will never assimilate...well only for microbrews that carry on that unamerican tradition of unfiltered tastiness.
