Mexico's leftwing presidential candidate vowed at the weekend to continue to reject last month's election result with increasingly radical tactics conducted "from the streets".

"The most important changes in Mexico have never come about through conventional politics but rather from the streets," he told the FT in a rare interview. Asked whether there was a danger that people would brand him a revolutionary, he replied: "Mexico needs a revolution."

"If the fraud is ratified, I could not recognise the institutions, obviously I would not recognise Felipe Calderón because I would consider him to be a spurious, illegal and illegitimate president," he added. "We would fight to make democracy count, renovate the institutions and undertake the changes this country needs."

"It makes no sense . . . Watergate is child's play compared with what went on here," he said. "But they(the authorities) don't want a full recount because they are going to find many irregularities

3. this is dangerous talk

the last thing the United States needs is instability in Mexico with millions of people rushing the borders en masse to escape violence brought on by a revolution and social uprising.

Also, thousands and thousands of poor people will be killed by the nations military by tanks to restore order. I don't see anything to cheer about. It would be an unmitigated humanitarian disaster for us and them.

It could also be worse. The October Revolution, for instance, caused little loss of life, though the civil war after it was worse.

Most of Mexico's wealth is controlled by the rich. I believe that if the Mexican government was more sympathetic to the working class and the poor then the US would not have trouble with illegal immigration.

8. The danger was already there -- from the fraud.

The fraud is what caused this dangerous situation. Fraud cannot be tolerated, even in the name of retaining stability, because it undermines democratic institutions. Weeks, or even months of social unrest cannot possibly equal the amount of cumulative damage that government corruption wreaks on the populance over the years -- that type of damage just happens in a non-localized, time distributed fashion so those who aren't effected can safely ignore it until it is their turn to feel the bite.

So let's put the blame where it belongs: on people who destabilize governments by committing fraud. This should have happenned in 2000 here.
