Katherine Harris aide quits campaign: Phantom tree fiasco blamed on him

By Larry Lipman | Sunday, August 20, 2006, 09:16 PM

Rhyan Metzler, the aide Katherine Harris blamed for the phantom tree fiasco last week, is no longer with Harris’ campaign. Metzler, who had been the campaign’s political director, confirmed late Sunday that he quit the campaign, but declined further comment. “I left her campaign and I wished her well,” Metzler said.

He said the tree incident was “not necessarily” the reason for his quitting. He hung up when asked for further reasons.

Harris spokeswoman Jennifer Marks said Metzler “was not adequately performing his duties. It was mutually decided” that he would leave the campaign. Marks declined to comment on who besides Metzler was involved in the decision. Metzler did not return a subsequent phone call seeking his reaction to Marks’ comment.

The tree incident occurred Thursday when Harris blamed the paltry turnout at a campaign rally at Orlando Executive Airport on the need to move the event because a tree had damaged the hanger in which the rally was originally scheduled. Airport officials later said no tree fell on a hanger and the rally was held in the hanger where it had been scheduled.

1. If there was any justice in the world, a tree would fall on her.
But there is none.

4. Katie, we know it's not your fault
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 09:59 PM by Sydnie
We know that you are a loyal Republican. You proved that in 2000. That is not in question at all. We know that you are not to blame if less than loyal people have deceived you into hiring them to work for you, again and again. We know that you are not that hard to work with or get along with. We know that these other people are to blame. They are not loyal to you and they should be banished. They should be sent to work for your opponent right away and not show them them any loyalty either so that the rest of the world will know that it is them that is hard to work with and hard to trust, not you.

Keep fighting Katie ... until the bank calls you about your outstanding overdraft charges on your campaign account and your personal accounts too. Keep fighting Katie, as long as there is one republican campaign worker that has not been on your payroll. Keep fighting Katie, and those people will see that you are a winner and they will regret ever being disloyal to someone as anointed as you.

Keep fighting Katie .... :sarcasm:

because there might still a small number of voters in Florida that need further proof that you are batshit crazy.

edit - typo

16. Wasted sarcasm tag. please remove it.
And send it to Katy, just like Delay believed Colbert she will believe every word. Imo, this letter mirrors her own mind.
I would very much like to see this great letter on her campaign website.
Hey, maybe she will invite you to work on her campaign, say for a nominal fee of $25,000 a week to help her get rid of some of her daddy's cash.

6. If a phantom tree falls on Ms. Harris's campaign,
and no campaign staff are there to see it, is it even possible to do any more damage to her campaign??

Hmm.

:freak:

9. I've spent a lot of time in airports over the last 20+ years
As a private pilot, a passenger, and in the aircraft maintenence areas with friends that are airline pilots.

I cannot remember ever once seeing a tree near an aircraft hangar.

Katherine Harris. Endorsed by the voices in her head!

10. interesting...i googled Metzler...
...who is merely described (dismissed, in more ways than one?) as an "aide", as if to suggest or insinuate it really isn't Harris's fault, but that of a low-level minion. Having worked on many an election myself, an aide suggests a place on the organizational food chain somewhere between volunteer and paid staff. So i googled the unfortunate Mr Metzler, but couldn't find any reference to what his actual title in the campaign was. But the search was not entirely in vain: i did find him on another site (RPOF--Republican Party of Florida official site), listed on the title page as North Central Florida Field Director, e.g., one of the top 20 GOP party officials in the state.

No political reporter worth their paycheck would not know this, and (speaking as a former stringer for a local rag) fail to inform the public of this...but the reporter (or the editor) is obviously being charitable to some of them (Harris or Metzler). Perhaps something for Florida DU'ers to peruse, if not pursue.

15. Katherine Harris is the gift that just keeps giving. At this rate maybe
she will still bail on the Senate campaign and start singing about 2000. I just hope she has material evidence because at this point no one would believe a word she says.

18. With all her campaign aides leaving her, can indictments be far behind?
...Maybe then she will start to "cooperate" and spill the beans on the Bush Boys Stolen Election in Florida 2000.

There are plenty of former campaign aides out there now who should have "some of the goods" who will talk. I would bet the Starbucks latte queen would sing like a canary if she really thought there was a jail cell waiting for her. Oh the tales she could tell.....
