Indian Americans upset over US senator's (Allen, R-VA) remarks

Senator George Allen's controversial comments about an Indian American youth flashed across the country last week, but nowhere more rapidly than in Virginia's Indian American community, where frustration over ethnic stereotypes has intensified since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Dolly Oberoi, chief executive of a Northern Virginia technology company, says: "To me it sounded like, 'You dirty kid, get out of my way.' That was very painful to a lot of people."

Virginia is home to about 80,000 adults with Indian ancestry, most of whom live in Northern Virginia, according to the US Census Bureau. In interviews across the state last week, many said they were offended and disappointed by the comments from the one-term Republican senator and former governor, according to a report in the Washington Post on Sunday.

...Many of its members are successful, especially in the region's information technology industries. And they are tight, placing a high value on sharing information quickly. When Allen's comments became public, the video link was sent nearly instantly across a very wired community...

Smita Siddhanti, president of an environmental consulting firm in Tysons Corner, said she had planned to vote for Allen before the incident. She does not know what was in Allen's heart, but she said she is disturbed that he could be so careless with his words.

She said she didn't know whom she would vote for now, the Post report said.

I took it from the position that someone with "environmental" in their title is at least putting themselves out there as concerned about the environment. I ended my email by saying that unless her job was to create environmental data to offset the "crazy libruls", she was just wasting her wind because this Administration wasn't listening to a word she had to say.

5. Why should they care? Allen supports H1Bs and offshoring.

Since Allen is for the dismantling of America's IT infrastructure, the Indian Americans should be shrugging this off and even laughing over it. They are winning and will in the end. Thanks to him.

I wonder what it would be like if Allen was against offshoring and made that remark...

I'll refrain the usual rhetoric of taking a US job because I too have a US job and rather like working. :)

It's funny how people can supposedly hate a person yet still have no qualms taking their services. Therefore the hate is feigned; a public spectacle. It's as simple as that.

They live in the States right now. But there is always country loyalty to consider. When the hard choices have to be made, when does a person fly the flag of the country they moved to... or the country they had left because they felt they were too good for their country of origin?

7. This isn't the first time Allen's racism has surfaced.

He's been careless throughout his life - from the racist graffiti on the walls of his high school to the noose in his law office - he hasn't kept it hidden.

It remains to be seen what Webb will do with it, though. Will he be willing to pull the KKK robes off of Allen? We'll see.

Still, the guy doesn't seem as much careless as he is utterly thoughtless. (If I hated a group of people -- and I don't -- I'd hardly call on them for help while calling them a bunch of names. Or expect them to help me if they found out what a racist I was.)

Maybe the guy is schizophrenic, but nothing adds up about this guy -- except his obvious hatred of just about everybody, in one form or another.
