What is your opinion of Mark Warner in 2008?
He could win states in the South. His politics are in the same mold as Bill Clinton and he's a southern governor which is where democrats have historically had success in winning the presidency. If he can bring Virgina to the dem column, we basically win the election. It's incredibly difficult for a republican to win without Virginia. And if we win Virginia with him, it means Tenessee and Louisiana and Florida are probably in our column as well.

Of course, the big problem with his candidacy and its a big problem is he's to the right of Hillary Clinton and we all know how much of a beloved figure she is on this board. ;)

3. Corporate ass-kissing DLCer.
Could win, but I'd rather we stop giving the president's job to corporate America over and over again.

I want a populist.

4. Personally
I'd rather elect a do nothing moderate dem than another neocon conservative that will drive the US into World War III and fiscally bankrupt us.

But that's just me. I'm very pragmatic about my politics.

6. Eyebrow
His eyebrow alone will keep him far away from the nomination.

And thank god for that. I'd vote 3rd party instead of voting for him.

14. lol
The 1st thing that popped in my mind about Warner, were his caterpillar, roaming eyebrows!

Followed quickly by him being a DLCer going to Bilderberg meetings.

Not a chance in hell, in an un-rigged election.

8. I could vote for him.
He could do something few other candidates we have could do, which is carry
several southern red states. Which would put us back in the White House.

Of course, considerations like that just don't seem to matter all that much to
the ideological purity kamikaze squad.

You know, the kinds of people who didn't vote for Al Gore in 2000 because
they claimed to believe that he was no different than George W. Bush...

The assumption is that blue states would stay blue.

I do not think Mark Warner winning the Democratic nomination would suddenly turn the blue states
into Republican states, do you?

13. Very talented and intelligent...provided a viable template...
For potential victory in red state America....

He is extremely smart, very politically adept. In four years as Governor here, he basically took the Republican legislature to school, passing a tax hike on upper income Virginians, and getting Republicans to like it...

He is not a liberal, but not particularly conservative. He was endorsed by the NRA I believe.

Not the best speaker in the world, better in a set speech format than in an extemporaneous setting. Not that his points are not intelligent, but he tends to speak in a halting voice undermining the impact of his point. This can be corrected however...

The fact that he is the most popular politician in Red Virginia should say something...

Should he run, and gain any kind of traction early on he would be formidible...

Having been a constituent of his, and having voted for him in 1996 when he almost unseated John Warner in the Senate race, and having also voted for him in 2001, I would have absolutely no problem voting for him again.

Sorry to be blunt. but the only time we have won the presidency since1960 has been with a Democrat with republican nuances. Kennedy was the last liberal we elected. Johnson was a pragmatist who saw the righting on the wall in the South and thought escalation would work in SE Asia. Carter was a reaction to Watergate ans was a southern moderate

Bill Clinton was a DLCer. who ran as a moderate and governed as a moderate.

We run unabashed liberals and we lose. the only way we win is with nuanced right wing politics.

20. I WILL vote for the Dem candidate in 08.
I will not sit home, I will not vote for a third party, I will not vote for a republican.
If Mark Warner is the Dem candidate for president in 08, I will vote for him.

I liked all the candidates in '04. I will probably have just as difficult time deciding among them in '08. Mark Warner was good for Virginia. If he will cut down on the number of foreign professionals who are brought in on H-1b visas to take jobs away from Americans, I may go for him in the primary because he is my former Governor and he did an exceptional job.

22. Meh... But I would vote for him in a general election...
He'd be better than Cheney, Jeb Bush, Brownback, Romney, Giuliani, McCain, Hagel (name any GOP candidate) by a country mile.

I'm looking forward to seeing ALL the potential Dem cabdidates speak on the issues, in the coming months. Warner could sway me, if he has some good ideas and some charisma.

23. Why is Mark Warner Richard Perle's (PNAC) second favorite Democrat??
for the presidential race in 2008. His first is Joe Lieberman.

I would just like to know where Gov. Warner is at on foreign policy issues

I spent hours and hours trying to look for clues and could find almost nothing except vague generalities and this:

1. He heaped praise upon Peter Beinart's latest book, "The Good Fight" which advocates a highly interventionist-highly militaristic worldview.

2. This article from the daily kos regarding comments he made regarding Venezuela and Iran - link: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/6/11/03338/1129

3. And a number of sites quoting the comment by Richard Perle; a man who did not have anything good to say about any other Democrat - even centrist/DLC Democrats except Sen. Lieberman.

I am not saying that these point disqualify Gov. Warner. If he wants to lead the most powerful country in the history of the world, he should let the world know where he stands on foreign policy issues.

I just hope he clarifies his foreign policy positions soon. That's all.

Please let me say that I'm genuinely interested in what Gov.Warner has to say about foreign policy. But what I have hear so far does not sound very encouraging. IE: his comments at the Kos convention in Las Vegas:link: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/6/11/03338/1129

from: A New "Perle Harbor": Neocon Foreign Policy Architect Richard Perle reveals US War Plans in the Iranian Theater

By Dr. Michael Carmichael

"When a perceptive student asked about his preferences for the next president of the United States, Perle made some riveting remarks. He immediately stated his hope that Senator Joseph Lieberman would be the Democratic candidate. Failing that miracle, Perle hopes former Governor Mark Warner will win the Democratic nomination. Perle warmly praised both right-leaning Democrats who are doyens of the Democratic Leadership Council. Richard Giuliani is Perle’s favorite Republican. When asked about potential presidential candidates who would cause him concern, Perle swiftly reeled off a long list of Democrats led by Governor Howard Dean, followed closely by Senator John Kerry, former Vice President Al Gore, former Senator John Edwards, and he finished his list of neoconservative hate figures with a revealing comment about Senator Hillary Clinton.

It is hardly secret that Senator Clinton has attempted to appeal to the Israeli right. When she visited Israel, she condemned the Palestinians, but Perle was not impressed. Quite the contrary, Perle said that while she had made some smart moves in her attempt to appeal to the right, the left did not believe her. This comment gave the clear impression that Perle did not believe her, either. Criticizing other Democrats, Perle said that Senator John Kerry, “did not understand power,” and was not able to perform the duties of the president of America. In his form of damnation by faint praise, Perle said that Howard Dean was a much nicer man off the podium than on it – and he gave him pride of place at the top of his most worrisome Democratic politicians.

The love affair between Perle’s base in Likud on the hard line Israeli right and the neoconservatives of both US political parties is alive and kicking. Perle has long been associated with Likud that has been reduced to a weak rump huddling around Benjamin Netanyahu in the new Knesset. As a close associate of Netanyahu, Perle is seen as Likud’s top-ranking advocate in Europe and America with his tentacles into both political parties, the Bush White House, the Pentagon and many other leading institutions. Next year, it would not be surprising to find Perle’s name on contributors lists to Giuliani, Lieberman and Warner."

"I think of war with Iran as the ending of America's present role in the world. Iraq may have been a preview of that, but it's still redeemable if we get out fast. In a war with Iran, we'll get dragged down for 20 or 30 years. The world will condemn us. We will lose our position in the world."

Zbigniew Brzezinski, Vanity Fair, 2006.
