What's the argument against it? That there was some other pampered Ivy Leaguer who got deprived of the job that she took from them? If someone's gonna make that kind of bread, it might as well be someone who's in favor of fixing the country's problems rather than just robbing us.

75. Especially when THEIR father, NOT Clinton, started this damned war.
And I'll bet Chelsea actually worked for the grades she got, rather than getting in on a pass to go to a party school and drink and party like the bush twins did. Chelsea is a president's daughter I can respect - daughter of a president who actually won the office twice - FAIR AND SQUARE. You can't say that about the father of the bush twins. He only got in because he cheated. Probably the only way he got in anywhere. And good for Chelsea for turning into such a swan. A nice kick in the teeth to people like limbaugh who couldn't crow loudly or frequently enough about her as "the White House dog." I bet they're laughing out of the other side of their ugly faces now.

84. but her mother, you may recall
voted to authorize the war and continues to vote to spend money to pursue the conflict. right? why are the sins of the fathers passed on to the children, but the sins of the mothers are not?

let me make this very clear. Senator Clinton supports the war in Iraq. Everytime she has hade the oppotunity to vote on the matter, she has supported contining military operations. Senator Clinton supports sending Americans to die in the sand. Why does her daughter get a pass on that, when the President's don't? you didn't answer that.

second, why is it somehow great that a Senator's daughter takes a consulting gig making a ton of money, while it is unacceptable for a President's daughter to take a job in a museum? Which one really serves the community more? your anger blinds you.

as a final comment, I think most people would be amused to hear you call Yale a party school. And if you don't think that Chelsea partied at Stanford and Oxford, then you are sorely misguided (in case you're wondering, a classmate of mine in highschool was her next door neighbor in Palo Alto, and a cousin was at Oxford at the same time as her) she did the same thing that many rich kids (yes, I was one of them) do in college. nothing different. I have no doubt she's an intelligent woman, but if we are going to lambast the Bush twins for their parents' politics, we must do the same for Chelsea, it's only fair. (you remember, of course, that without the Senate approving funding for the war, it would have stopped three years ago)

be reasonable.

or she'll be discredited as a woman. Sadly, she may be right about that. I wish she had taken another path, but I also wish John Kerry had too. This, however, is hindsight. I'm paying close attention to what Hillary will do next on the war.

86. I said nothing about the Former President, actually
I mentioned the current Junior Senator for New York, who has, at every opportunity, supported the War. That makes her no different, really, than the people running the war, since she refuses to publically question it, and continues to authorize spending obscene amounts of money to continue operations. I'm sorry if that upsets you, but it is, in fact, the case. How'd she vote on the resolution to withdraw troops again? right.

If, therefore, it is reasonable (and I don't think it is, by the way) to ask why the Bush twins are not fighting in the war, then it is just as reasonable to ask why the daughter of a sitting US Senator who supports the war isn't fighting in the war. I don't see how that is "sniveling and snarking and pissing" as you so eloquently put it, simply pointing out a noticable double standard. I see people here all the time who say "if you support the war, send your children to fight it" fine. explain please, why this standard does not apply to Senator Clinton?

and do you somehow think that Ms. Clinton didn't use her family name to a: get into Stanford in the first place (surely she deserved it, but then 8 thousand deserving people a year get turned away from Stanford, it's a crapshoot for almost everyone) and d: get a high paying job? she'd really be an idiot if she didn't use family connections, that's what they're there for, right? and we've established that she isn't an idiot, far from it.

23. Granted, it'd be ridiculous for her to resist a draft
if her parents initiated or supported one, regardless of her personal feelings on the war, for exactly the reason you mentioned. But, for the most part, a non-draft situation I think is different. (Of course, there were definitely plenty of already enlisted men and women who didn't support the idea of an Iraq invasion.)

50. There Isn't A Draft Now
certainly I get your point

I don't know that either Hillary or Bill supported this war the way in which it was done

that sounds like the Republican Meme "Clinton did it too"

Most Senators and Representatives who voted for the pResident to have the right to use force, did not envision him going about it the way he did, in the time frame he did it.

I'd have to know more about Clinton and Clinton's positions on the war before I'd proclaim a judgment against them on this.

No one thinks Saddam was a good guy. He needed to be gone. The UN was doing it's job verifying the lack of WMD's. I think that there were many options open to "take out" Saddam more creatively than the one that was chosen.

No, I don't and didn't support the war.

Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 08:05 PM by brentspeak
Speaking only for myself, if I were the son of a famous person (or persons, in Chelsea's case), I wouldn't want to rely on my name to make it in the world. For instance, if I wanted to be an actor and my father were a famous actor, I'd use a different last name while auditioning for parts, try to make it on my own merits.

its not just her name EVERYBODY in this country has seen pictures of her - it would be impossible for her to apply for any job and not have people know who the hec she is - I don't think this is at all a valid criticism of her - she can't help who she is and if it has helped her get a good job than so be it...She probably is a complete brainiac like her parents and even if who she is helped her I'm betting she is more than able to do the job....not like the dumb ass in chief who traded on his name all his life.... and probably his dumb ass daughters too....

110. Her name? did that work for Roger Clinton?
Nope. If a am McKinsey (her employer) and I look at applicants, what I would see in Chelsea is:
- an extraodinary amount of experience with powerful people in high profile situations (grant you she wasn't the one negotiating, etc but she certainly knows the dynamics and vocabulary better than any 22YO out there)
- an outstanding education
- grace under fire (from the age of about 12)
- connections and access to mom and dad's rolodexes once and a while

Completely worth the $120K IMHO. If Roger Clinton came looking for same job his name wouldn't mean anything.

Nobody knows what a marriage is like except the people in it.

And the Clintons have stayed together through some very rough times, unlike Repigs Reagan, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Dole, Dick Armey, Phil Gramm, Pete Wilson, George Allen, Giuliani, John Warner, McCain, Kissinger, Henry Hyde, ad nauseum, who are all divorced at least once.

97. I think NAFTA /CAFTA and the others might have
been tweaked a little if Clinton were in office today. I think there would more protection added to make them more FAIR rather than FREE trade agreements.

Remember, when Clinton was in office we had peace and prosperity. It wasn't until after the election when there was a chance the decision could go either way that the stock market had its first nervous dip and not until after Bush took office that it started to fall.

Then there was offshoring and h-1b visas that hurt working Americans.
We had a JOBLESS recovery because the rich were getting richer and the gap increased between the middle and upper income Americans.

Clinton would have done something for the working class. That is just the kind of man he is.

Clintons "golden" years weren't so "golden" for everyone. Maybe it's easy for you to forgive his misdeeds, but our family is working class and the passage of NAFTA hurt the working class badly!!! Clinton did us NO favors with NAFTA in the 90s and we struggled for years through his administration and the beginning of the * occupation, when my husband lucked upon a good paying union job. I doubt Clinton would be helping us now-he's all for the elite and moneyed class-he proved that with NAFTA! Don't forget his buddy buddy friendship with the * family. UGH! :puke:

49. Yeah
I agree, but it's difficult to prove and well nigh impossible without the right kind of evidence.

Chelsea is definitely pretty, and obviously intelligent as well. But then, both her parents are highly intelligent, and she's got the ability to go far.

The difference between her and the Bush twins is quite obvious; monied or not, there is a difference when someone has class, and someone doesn't. You could be the richest person in the world, but if you don't have an understanding of the world around you, and the wisdom to deal with it gracefully, you lack the class that makes you part of the real human race. Otherwise, you end up just like GWB: a rich idiot.

I feel sorry for people who can't give a person their due. Yeah, I'd say Chelsea deserve's whatever salary she's making...she's proven herself academically and I'm sure she's got plenty of real world experience to command the salary she's making. Her name is both a curse and a benefit...it's always that way for children of famous people. Some handle it well...like her. Others, not so much. I'm sure Barb and Jenna could have found jobs paying as much, or more...but I think we all know that would be another Arbusto special.

61. Seems like so many people in this thread just want to knock Chelsea
because of her parents. Jeeze, she went to college, made good grades, (I don't recall any major scandals like fake IDs, out rip roaring drunk, etc.), got her Masters and is now working. Hell, a company would be lucky to have her. This young woman has seen and EXPERIENCED history from a very unique position, comes from two very smart, accomplished parents, was very successful in college, made her own way and doesn't seem to cause anyone a minute of trouble. There is so much to dislike.

And look at the Kennedy kids, Gores', Kerry's - all those people are smart, articulate, producing adults - unlike so many repugs who are boasting on My Space about sex, drugs and rock and roll. There are two twins that are worst than useless lying around the White House, chain smoking and generally partying their 20s away like dear ol' Dad. Some comparison.

Yeah, I'd knock Chelsea, too. She is such a horrible, horrible person.:sarcasm:

I would be proud to call Chelsea my daughter and I'm pretty sure her parents are, too. Beautiful inside and out.

And Happy Birthday, Big Dog!

74. How many of you here graduated from Stanford & Oxford & work for McKinsey
Obviously not a lot or you or you wouldn't be so shocked at what Chelsea has accomplished & what her salary is. Nor what a lot of grads from Yale, Harvard & other Ivy League schools "start off" making in NY. The sky is the limit. Chelsea is exactly what McKinsey & Company looks for when hiring.

As far as I'm concerned Chelsea is not only pretty, & intelligent, but most importantly, she has class & that is something you can never accuse the bush twins of possessing. Say what you will about her parents, but criticizing a young woman as accomplished as dignified she is, is just plain stupid & viscious.

Some background on Chelsea & the firm she works for, suggest you all read this before you judge her:

Chelsea was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist in 1997, graduated from Stanford University with a degree in history in 2001; her undergraduate thesis was on her father's mediation of the 1998 Northern Ireland peace agreement. She went on to earn a Master's degree at University College, Oxford University in international relations.

In 2003, she joined the consulting firm McKinsey & Company in New York City, Known internally as "The Firm" Marvin Bower who joined The Firm in 1933 broke with industry practice in his time by focusing hiring efforts on recent graduates from the best business schools, rather than among experienced managers. The premise for this was that analytical rigor and fresh insights were of greater value to clients than conventional wisdom. McKinsey has been known to make rare exceptions to this policy by hiring senior staff from industry, and in later years it has diversified its recruiting base by soliciting candidates from graduate programs within law, medicine, engineering, science, and the liberal arts as well as by recruiting "experienced hires" from a variety of professional backgrounds including the military, law and medicine.

McKinsey is one of the most sought-after destinations for graduates of top MBA programs, having been rated #1 in the Universum survey of most desirable employers for the past nine years. The Firm is the largest single recruiter at the world's top business schools. It is also the largest private recruiter at Harvard Law School and employs more Rhodes Scholars than any organization outside of the State Department.

McKinsey also recruits very selectively among undergraduates, hiring as "Business Analysts" recent graduates from top universities to work as consultants alongside its associates for ~18-24 months. The BA program is one of the most competitive in industry and is coveted by many business-oriented undergraduates. Some business analysts choose to stay at McKinsey for an additional year as a BA, often to join an office abroad or specialize in a given industry. Many business analysts are sponsored by McKinsey to attend graduate schools, usually for a MBA but sometimes for other master's or Ph.D. degrees, after their initial two years at McKinsey and rejoin the firm afterwards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McKinsey_%26_Company

Also worth reading and keep in mind these kids don't even have Chelsea's credentials, in fact, they haven't even graduated yet:

91. What did McCain say about Chelsea???
He's not exactly easy on the eyes. In fact, it looks like he's having some serious problems with his face, so he really shouldn't talk.

On the other hand, Chelsea Clinton is a fine young lady!!!

100. She was just unlucky enough to be put into the public spotlight
right during her 'awkward phase'. Everybody goes through it. Some of us less than others thankfully. :)

104. Gawd the "awkward phase" I HATED IT!
I was 5'6 and 95 lbs in 7th grade, by 9th I was 6'1" and 155.
I couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time, trip over painted lines...man, my BONES hurt from the stretching...awkward phase, indeed.

130. I was lucky... my awkward phase was just my junior year.
A little later than most others... but it meant I was able to date and whatnot all three other years of high school. :) The regular growing awkward phase kind of missed me though. I hit my growth spurts early but they took the entire course of middle school to finish. So at the end of 8th grade, I was the same height I am now. My awkward phase was just when my face exploded. Freshman year... 5'10, 125 pounds... sophmore year, put on some muscle, 150 pounds, starting to look good then BLAM. Junior year came around and I developed such bad acne that my face actually HURT most of the time. I was on prescription medication for it, and it barely made a difference.
Of course, I kinda let myself go then and was up to 180 by my senior year... but once the face cleared up, a couple of extra pounds still wasn't enough to make me not look hot. :)

114. This thread is ridiculous....
at least what I was able to stomach. It's amazing how many people came out of the woodwork at the chance to bash a Clinton.

There is absolutely nothing I've ever seen or heard about Chelsea for her to deserve what's being said about her.

And yes, she's gorgeous!

117. Everyone is So Amazed
That she is making $100,000?? Wow she comes from a mother and a father with very high IQ, don't you think the young lady has inherited the "smart" gene from her parents? By the way $100,000 today is not such a big deal.

118. I agree, but...
I don't think that's a very good picture of her.

Actually, I'm not sure that I've ever seen that great of a photo of hers. Perhaps she's not very photogenic -- I've had the fortune to meet her once or twice in real life, and she looks GREAT in real life. Much prettier than any picture I've ever seen of her.
