Witek Will Run As Democrat For State Auditor

POSTED: 8:37 am CDT August 20, 2006
UPDATED: 8:52 am CDT August 20, 2006
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- State Democrats on Saturday nominated State Auditor Kate Witek to serve as the party's candidate for auditor on the November ballot, just days after Witek switched parties.

After entering the party's state convention in Grand Island with no candidate for state auditor, Democratic delegates voted 171-106 to approve Witek as the party's candidate.

Witek said her party switch wasn't about keeping her job. She did not run for re-election in the Republican primary and would have been out of office in January.

She said that with 14 years experience in government, she's sure she could find work elsewhere.

Witek won her first auditor term in 1998. Instead of running for re-election this year, she stood as Republican Tom Osborne's running mate in the May primary.

Osborne lost the Republican primary to Gov. Dave Heineman.

1. This how bad I have gotten: This sounds like another repug trick
to keep repugs in office..I sure hope I'm wrong...I hate feeling that every good thing that comes our way is some repug trick.

4. Indeed. Look how much work it's taking to get rid of Lieberman.
There's got to be a way of keeping the quality high.

5. Yeah, it does sound like that. But I think the repugs are going
to invest the next few years hijacking the independent parties and transforming their message superficially. Of course, the agenda will be the same. Empire-building.

2. Now if we could just get
Ben Nelson to show his true colors. If that appeasing mugwumnp's a Democrat, then everyone on these boards are Anarcho-Syndicalists!

By God, when the Senate's back in Democratic hands, if he starts that Lieberman-esque Bush-cozying, he ought to be stripped of every bit of power he wields.

Thanks, Ben, for voting for Sam Alito. Thanks, Ben, for voting in favor of tying a pathetic minimum wage increase to a tax cut for Anna Nicole Smith. Thanks for nuthin', Ben.

3. Really, I don't trust any Republican switching to Dem to run for office.
It just isn't in them to be sincerely a Dem.
