Why doesn't the UN get involved in Iraq like they did with Lebanon??

More people are dying in Iraq and it's a bigger mess and a bigger threat to regional and world stability, so why is everyone sitting on their hands? Is it because Bush more or less told the UN to kiss his ass, he was going in alone? And now it's his baby? You broke it and now it's yours Georgie Porgie?

1. Simple. There is no such "cease fire" in Iraq

You cannot honestly expect UN member states to send troops into a war zone and get involved in a war somebody else started.

We didn't want them interfering with our invasion of Iraq, and after the invasion was an accomplished crime, we didn't provide the UN office compound with security. The chief of the UN mission, Sergio Vieira de Mello, was killed and the UN got the message.

In a recent letter to the president of the council, Secretary- General Kofi Annan
highlighted UNAMI's successful efforts to facilitate the country's political
transition in the past year, particularly with regard to the holding of two
national elections and the adoption of a new constitution.

He noted, however, that Iraq "continued to face formidable political, security and
economic challenges" and still needed support from the international community.
Insurgent, militia and terrorist attacks had continued unabated in many places,
and sectarian violence posed an increasing threat to the Iraqi people.
