to the dollars that the White House requested for kids to send for the Afghanistan kids? The best I remember it was right smack in the middle of the Anthrax attacks. Did they ever try to follow up on that at all? Or, were the dollars just a mail room employee's bonus?

1. There are programs in Afghanistan trying to make it a better place. |
|
People from my institution have been there -- on the government's dime -- trying to make a difference.

I'd also like to know what happened to the vast amount of money donated to the Red Cross, etc., for Katrina and 911 as well.
I'm not a very good net researcher - is there any way to find out how much was collected and how the funds are being used?

red cross donations to katrina |
|
in katrina there was a vast area that was served by the red cross providing water, food supplies, and emergency cash across a very wide area of the coast
katrina occurred at the end of the month and before the social security checks would have come out on sept. 3, also before many people were able to get paid from their jobs, so by passing out $300 in immediate cash to people in immediate need, they did help prevent a lot of unnecessary hardship
no, they weren't everywhere at every time and they didn't do everything perfectly -- but neither did the federal gov't to put it mildly

3. i doubt they got many dollars |
|
that was the weirdest attempt by *co to scam money ever, how you could possibly ask people to send $$$ to afghanistan after their gov't had just given shelter and support for the financial backers of 911 like osama bin laden
you simply don't send $$$ to afganistan "kids," no kid was going to get that money, it would go to politicians -- we were being asked in effect to provide $$$ and resources to our enemy -- we were at war w. these people, we had just invaded them, it was stupid and to my mind it bordered on treason
when osama bin laden is caught, when mullah omar is caught, when we are no longer at war in afghanistan and there is no longer taliban living there, fine, get back to me and ask to send $$$ over there
but not now and sure as hell not in october 2001
very bizarre and treasonous episode of american history to be sure, i too wonder why more wasn't made of this except i think people were simply too stunned by the stupidity of it all to know how to respond
i think the BEST outcome was "mail room employee's bonus," more realistic outcome was that it was a bonus to osama and friends for "job well done" in getting *co poll ratings up

8. Only about 15% to 20% of donated monies to special cause charities |
|
...like these ever reach the intendant recipients. It's a big con-game, but the republicans and especially Bush get that "feel good bounce" in the polls from saying private charities and donations work better than government money.
