The Democrats could be the anti-tax party if they wanted to
The Democrats could be the anti-tax party if they wanted to by proposing that there be no audits for all taxpayers making under $100,000 unless there is a clear and compelling case of fraud. Then they could propose abolishing the income tax all together for workers making under $35,000 a year. They could put a populist spin on it by saying that "we trust you. We trust you to do your taxes honestly. The other party does not trust you and does audits and hires private debt collectors to harass Americans."

All of which would be paid for by pulling out of Iraq and rolling back that part of the Bush tax cuts that went to the top 2% of Americans.

1. Good Idea,How is it that 2% Rule 98% ? Fear and Control. Trust is...
another issue altogether. In order for Democrats to be Magnanimous again we have to turn the screw on " Getting along " as opposed to getting it Right!

3. The Democrats could be ALOT of things if they wanted to be
Face it...The Dems lost their base over the years. They banked on union labor being a potent force for the foreseeable future, and slept while it eroded away. While this happened, the Republicans changed their strategy and put people into every low-level office they could find to pump up the numbers from the bottom.

The Dems need to do two things:
1) Get the idea that this Centrist "Republican Lite" concept will work for them. Just as in business, playing follow the leader seldom works unless you have something so vastly better than anyone else to offer. Face it. The Dems don't.
2) Differentiate by returning to their roots in different form.

This means SUPPORT THE PEOPLE WHO CARRY THE LOAD in this country.

Labor was the little guy. They did the work. They paid their fair share. Small business is the labor force of the business world, and nobody truly represents small business. Small business pays their taxes, either through their business, or on their personal taxes using an LLC or and S-Corp. Big business does not. Big business gets tax deals for land, for construction, for employment, and small businesses don't.

The Dem's won't get anywhere saying "We're big business too". They won't by saying Dems are like Repubs only better. They won't by saying they are against anything. They will by supporting the little guy and gal who carries the load

The only way the Dems will ever get ahead is when they can promise something will get better, and follow through on that promise.

4. I don't agree.

I'm generally sceptical about this - with the American defecit as high as it is, I don't think that tax cuts, even for the poor, should be on the agenda.

I also think that one section of the populace that most clearly *doesn't* deserve tax breaks is those who cheat on their taxes, which this in essence would be. Checking that people aren't doing so brings in far more revenue than it costs, and as such is clearly a good idea, I think; not doing so would lead to even more tax evasion. The US should have more tax collectors, not fewer.

Saying "we trust all of you" to a group of people some of whom are not trustworthy, is silly, I think.

5. More than taxes are needed to pay off the debt
Right now if every American paid an equal share of the national debt, it would be just about $28,000 each!

Raising taxes might have helped when it was 3 or 4 trillion. But now it is projected to be near $10 trillion by the time Bush leaves office.
