I saw this back in January but thought it deserved a thread for those who still think Al is "wooden". I used to think so too until I saw this speech. I now sport this on my car:

3. He was only wooden when the DLC were pulling his strings
and trying to package him as a bland, business as usual coporate conservative. The DLC handlers were the problem. It sounds like he's found the solution in being himself.

7. Yeah, Kerry was considered to add charisma to the ticket
That was the story summer of 2000. Funny how Mr. Charisma turned into Mr. Wooden just 3 years later. The media is full of shit and I wish people would just stop buying into any of this crap.

19. Everyone READ what Sandnsea says!! The corporate media is responsible
for the "wooden" bullshit - DON'T BUY IT EVER AGAIN! It can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, but mostly the charges of "wooden" were just bullshit.

8. I think Al Gore was dynamic and inspiring in person ....
Though I agree his warmth and passion did not come across as well at televised "news conference" type events ... I believe his being wooden and boring was a fabrication of the media. We heard it repeated so often, saw clips that highlighted what the media wanted us to believe about him ... people began to believe it to be true.

I am not denying that there was a grain of truth to the image (but, really not much more than a few grains. Obviously someone as dynamic and charismatic as Bill Clinton could not be portrayed as wooden ... but, "they" just found a different way to portray him.

11. yes -- dynamic, charismatic people tend to get called "wacky"!
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 09:18 PM by Lisa
Someone who is an enthusiastic speaker can be portrayed as "fanatical" or "unstable". Both Clinton and Gore were derided when some commentators felt they sounded too much like preachers -- or even accused of "pandering" by trying to sound like Martin Luther King Jr. or Jesse Jackson.

And of course, there's the much-ballyhooed "Dean Scream". I have helped out on local city campaigns, and really it was quite minor compared to the yelling and shouting I've heard from other candidates.

Just goes to show how right you are -- it's possible to spin anything in a negative way.

12. I heard Gore at a 2000 rally, and he was a great speaker
It was a partisan crowd, but we went wild. I then read the press reports of the same event. All said he was wooden and the crowd was dutiful in it's response. The media lies!!!!

I saw him speak in person in 2000 and he was very dynamic and charismatic. The media DOES lie!

14. I want to see several people competing for the nomination.
I'm willing to accept that Gore has finally seen the light, and could be a viable Presidential candidate. But I want to see him fight for the nomination (i.e. he has to WANT it, not wait for the party to beg him to run). And I want to see him in contention against Kucinich and Edwards, all three of them throwing out their positions for the party to decide upon.

I do NOT want to see Clinton run (she's the Republicans' favorite candidate and they're ready to smear her as a member of the Lesbian Taliban). I do NOT want to see Kerry run, since (aside from his continuous stream of fundraising e-mails) he's been a Pink Tutu Democrat.

"Our good friend Daddy W wouldn't torture or steal votes!"

But let Gore, Kucinich and Edwards put their best positions forward, and the Democrats may have a candidate that can actually win.

17. You're Forgetting Feingold
I'd like to see him run as well. If he does well enough, and Gore wins the primaries, Feingold would make a good running mate.

18. Yes, he's looking more like Elvis every day. Somebody should really...
put him on a diet.

Although if there were ever a reason to seek consolation in food, it is being cheated out of the presidency of the United States.

20. I want him fatter. Sick of people being made to conform to idiotic
surface characteristic standards to be considered acceptable?

Then reject them.
