GOP hopeful trying to put killing behind him
GOP hopeful trying to put killing behind him

Matthew Benson
The Arizona Republic
Aug. 19, 2006 12:00 AM

A Laveen businessman running for the statehouse in Phoenix was charged with murder three years ago in the death of a woman in rural Arizona.

Daniel Coleman, now 35, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of first-degree murder after he shot 35-year-old Annette Chalker in the face in 2003. But the case never went to trial. Two former prosecutors who worked on it said that evidence of a murder was lacking and that a conviction appeared unlikely.

...

Now, Coleman is a Republican candidate for one of two House seats in District 16 in south Phoenix. He is running in the Sept. 12 primary and would face stiff competition in the Nov. 7 general election. The district is predominantly Democratic.

"Basically, I don't feel like I did anything wrong," Coleman said of the shooting when contacted by The Arizona Republic. "It was an accident. It was a tragedy. I don't understand necessarily why any of this is coming up."

Yup. He'll fit right in with the rest of the pro-lifers in the republican party.

4. Amazing....this man kills someone, and thinks nothing of it...
I certainly hope the voters in that district can see just how assinine this scenario is.

Leave it to the GOP to find the best candidates...:eyes:

5. oh that poor poor man
I for one am glad that he overcame such a tragic experience. Accidents will happen, just look at our fat little vice president who shot his friend in the face. Fortunately, he had the gonads to overcome such a tragedy and to accept the old farts apology for getting in the way of our fat little vice president's pellets. I think Coleman should get the seat in congress just cuz he is able to endure such tragedy ... without going to jail that is. A**hole.

6. He either bought off someone or they are hoping to try him later...
because even if they did not take him to trial for first-degree murder, they could try him for manslaughter. So either he has been given a 'get-out-of-jail-free' card or the prosecutors are hoping they can gather more evidence!

17. He WAS NOT acquitted.
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 12:07 PM by hlthe2b
Big difference, IMO. The facts were never examined in a court of law. A lack of evidence (or perhaps,'will' on the part of prosecutors) does not necessarily equate to "lack of guilt" or culpability. We don't know, is the point... But his cavalier attitude sends a major message to me...

benefit of the doubt and all that...but....I know very few people that have been involved in incidents like these. You'd think with so few representing so many...they'd be able to find a person a little more stable.

15. Why must these people always put up
criminals, overt racists, pedophiles (http://www.armchairsubversive.com), killers, DUIers etc. up ?

Is it that hard to find a garden variety covertly racist, mean-spirited, selfish a-hole without a criminal record for the GOP these days :P?

snip: Salmon called Coleman's DUI "unsettling."

"The Republican Party did not recruit him to run," Salmon said. "I'm very discouraged about anybody who has a DUI in their background."

27. "Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who."
RANDOM: There he is!
FATHER: Oh, bloody hell.
LAUNCELOT: Ha-ha! etc.
FATHER: Hold it, hold it! Please!
LAUNCELOT: Sorry, sorry. See what I mean, I just get carried away.
I really must -- sorry, sorry! Sorry, everyone.
RANDOM: He's killed the best man!

FATHER: Hold it, please! Hold it! This is Sir Launcelot from the
court of Camelot -- a very brave and influential knight, and my special
guest here today.
LAUNCELOT: Hello.
RANDOM: He killed my auntie!

FATHER: Please, please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion!
Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who. We are here today to
witness the union of two young people in the joyful bond of the holy
wedlock. Unfortunately, one of them, my son Herbert, has just fallen
to his death. But I think I've not lost a son, so much as... gained
a daughter! For, since the tragic death of her father--
RANDOM: He's not quite dead!
FATHER: Since the near fatal wounding of her father--
RANDOM: He's getting better!
FATHER: For, since her own father... who, when he seemed about to
recover, suddenly felt the icy hand of death upon him,...

RANDOM: Oh, he's died!
FATHER: And I want his only daughter to look upon me... as her own
dad -- in a very real, and legally binding sense.

And I feel sure that the merger -- uh, the union -- between the
Princess and the brave, but dangerous, Sir Launcelot of Camelot...
LAUNCELOT: What?
