A Republican political group with a goal of boosting the number of GOP Texas House members to 100 by 2009 (the Rs currently hold 86 seats) has lined up Karl Rove as their guest speaker for an Austin fundraiser next week.
Karl Rove, President Bush’s longtime political adviser, headlines the Aug. 19 event at Austin’s Renaissance Hotel. The Associated Republicans of Texas hopes to raise at least $250,000 from guests ponying up as much as $25,000 for a table for 10 — though folks can get in for $200 a person.
Gov. Rick Perry is penciled in as the honorary chairman, with others expected to attend including Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Attorney General Greg Abbott, Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones and Sen. Todd Staples of Palestine, the GOP nominee for state agriculture commissioner.
Pat Robbins, ART’s executive director, said Rove has been an association pal since the group’s inception more than 30 years ago. “People don’t get many opportunities to hear him talk and get the other side of the way things are from what they read in the press,” Robbins said.http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/campaign/entries/2006/08/09/
