Would someone like to respond
to this editorial in the Raleigh News & Observer (McClatchy paper) concerning FISA and eavesdropping. This is their second attack on the decision by the district court against the bush administration. Their attacks are like so many others in that they assume those surveilled are terrorists and of course, our laws should be revisited to mirror Britian's. I cannot respond in that my waiting period for writing hasn't run out yet from my last published piece. I would love for DU'ers to respond with a letter to the editor. Respond to forum@newsobserver.com . Here follows the editorial:

1. Additional note
This would be great for ACLU members of DU since the ACLU is involved.

2. I'm not the most coherent letter writer.
Here are the salient points I would think:
1. The Feds already HAVE the ability to wiretap, they just need a warrant.
2. This is to protect our constitutional rights, which is what makes this country what it is.
3. The president is sworn to uphold the constitution.
4. The Brits may or may not have foiled a major plot. it remains to be seen. They have already released a couple of people they arrested.
5. The president is making other power grabs like the signing statements issue and ignoring the Geneva conventions. If we allow this to continue, we will not be protecting ourselves, we will be destroying our country and everything it stands for.
6. The chances of a terrorist killing a citizen here is less than being hit by lightening. Do we really want to sell our country down the river for such a minor threat?

3. 7. Presidents by definition are TEMPORARY office holders --
The Constitution is PERMANENT.

If Bush doesn't like the playbook, fukkin BENCH HIS ASS.
