5. In general, I agree. But the thought of a NEW Lounge..

just makes my flesh crawl.

Every once in a while I stagger over there and I just cannot understand what the heck is going on.

Is the Lounge the MySpace of DU?

I wish there was a magic wand to pass over GD and make everything perfect and right.

But I still believe it is one of the coolest whatevers on the web.

9. I used to feel that way

Until the thousandth time I read someone bashing Dems in GD without any facts, or arguing the exact some points over and over in more aggressive language. I used to feel that GD was the serious part of DU, and the Lounge was where people went to blow off steam. Now I feel they are exactly reversed. The old DU has retreated to the topic forums.

MrScorpio's a good influence.

I like a good discussion, and can hold my own in any verbal battle, but I too often leave a GD thread feeling like I've wasted a good evening on a subject that could have been a serious discussion but turned into a shouting match just for the sake of shouting. Too much Dem bashing, too. I see more posts attacking Dems than Republicans, too often. And too often GD seems to have an inflated sense of its own seriousness--accomplishing nothing, contributing few facts, and damaging the party with empty flame-fests over trivial issues disguised as serious subjects. Too many vertical threads, not enough horizontal posting, and when there is, it often comprises one serious poster and one or more factless shouters hoping to win by volume. Then the post stuff like this thread, bashing the Lounge. This old-timer DUer and former GD brawler doesn't agree--I see more use for the Lounge these days than GD. When we get into battles that matter, maybe it will be different.

Again, not all GD threads are like this, but enough that I'd rather spend my time arguing whether Talladega Nights was insulting to Southerners in the Lounge. Neither is productive, but one is at least fun.

I wish I had a dollar for every "I was just in GD ... hold me" thread in the Lounge.

This is the first GD thread in ages that I've seen even acknowledge the Lounge. Besides, as a guy who posts in both forums, I can vouch that GD is not nearly as cliquish as the Lounge.

And that statement, of course, will probably ensure that I will never get another response to anything I post in the Lounge again. But I'm just speaking my mind, so let the chips fall as they may.

say, another thread about the Democrats missing or growing various gender-specific body parts, or another "Hillary is a conservative" thread (insert Dem-bashing subject du jour). Half the time in GD I feel like I've wandered into Free Republic, with all the mysogyny, Dem bashing, lack of facts or logic or perspective, and sheer hatred.

Not always. Maybe not even most (I've never done a statistical analysis). Just too often for me to feel like hanging out in GD. That changes when a topic worthy of debate breaks. DU is the best place to read good analysis of meaningful topics. But on average, I spend a lot more time in the Lounge.
