The Detonators: The Secret Plot to Destroy America and an Epic Hunt for Justice
Chad Millman
direct video link - http://www.booktv.org/History/ram/history/0806/btv081306_1.ram

In "The Detonators," Chad Millman tells the story of a 1916 German terrorist attack in New York that destroyed much of lower Manhattan. German saboteurs bombed an ammunition depot on Black Tom Island -- just south of Manhattan -- to undermine U.S. attempts to assist the British war effort in World War I. Mr. Millman also tells the story of a private lawsuit against Germany to recoup the financial losses caused by the blast. The South Street Seaport Museum hosted this event.

Chad Millman is a former reporter for Sports Illustrated and CNNSI. Currently, he is a senior editor at ESPN Magazine. Mr. Millman is a graduate of Indiana University. Other books he has written include "The Odds: One Season, Three Gamblers, and the Death of Their Las Vegas" and "Pickup Artists: Street Basketball in America."

Hooked: Pirates, Poaching, and the Perfect Fish
Bruce Knecht
Direct video link - http://www.booktv.org/General/ram/feature/0806/btv081306_4.ram

From the Egan Martime Foundation in Nantucket, Bruce Knecht talks about the popularity and near-extinction of the Chilean Sea Bass (properly known as the Patagonian toothfish). The high demand and price for the toothfish in the United States and elsewhere has attracted poachers who catch the fish in huge quantities. As a result, the population of the toothfish has dropped by over 90 percent since the middle of the last century. During his talk, Mr. Knecht tells the story of the capture of one of these poaching vessels by an Australian government patrol boat, after one of the longest chases in maritime history. He shows video footage of the chase and capture and shares stories about his encounters with the captain of the poaching vessel.

Bruce Knecht writes for the Wall Street Journal and has had his work published in the Atlantic Monthly, Conde Nast Traveler, and the New York Times Magazine. He is the author of "The Proving Ground."

Thomas Swick

Thomas Swick shares his experiences as an author on book tour in the Midwest. Thomas Swick is the travel editor of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and the author of the memoir "Unquiet Days: At Home in Poland." His work has appeared in Travel & Leisure, National Geographic Traveler and The New York Times Book Review. Mr. Swick's essays were chosen for the 2001 and 2002 editions of The Best American Travel Writing.

The talk was hosted by Politics and Prose in Washington, DC. Mr. Linden answers questions from the audience following his remarks.

The One That Got Away: A Memoir
Howell Raines

Aspen Institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson interviews Howell Raines about his latest book, "The One that Got Away: A Memoir." Howell Raines discusses the two themes in his book, his work as the editor of The New York Times and fishing. He uses fishing as a metaphor for how to survive irreversible losses in business and in life. He describes his current interest in becoming a novelist and discusses what he sees in the future for newspapers -- specifically the future of The New York Times after the Jayson Blair scandal.

Howell Raines was the executive editor of The New York Times from 2001 until his resignation following the Jayson Blair scandal in 2003. Currently, he writes political commentary for The Guardian, a British paper. He is the author of "Whiskey Man," a novel, and "My Soul Is Rested," an oral history of the Civil Rights movement. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 1992. Mr. Raines received a BA degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1964. He went on to earn an MA degree in English from the University of Alabama.

Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers
Kwame Anthony Appiah

Kwame Anthony Appiah argues that the power of one is stronger than the power of difference. In his new book, the author explains that "Cosmopolitanism" is a philosophy derived from Greek Cynics that played a major part in the shaping of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution and the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Mr. Appiah urges Western leaders to adopt this cultural method for the sake of humanity. This event was hosted by Olsson's Books and Records in Washington, DC.

Kwame Appiah is Laurence S. Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy and the Center for Human Values at Princeton University. He is the author of "In My Father's Houses" and "Thinking it Through" and co-editor of "Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience" with Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Eric Burns
direct video link - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/0606/btv060406_1.ram

In "Infamous Scribblers" Eric Burns recounts the impact of colonial newspapers on early American culture. The author explains that since Boston's Publick Occurrences newspaper of the 1690's, the founding fathers continously made headlines and were subject to both character assassinations and outright fabrications. This event was hosted by Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC.

Eric Burns is a freelance writer whose literary work has ranged from non-fiction and short stories to poetry and reviews. He is the author of "The Smoke of the Gods: A Social History of Tobacco," "The Spirits Of America: A Social History of Alcohol" and "Broadcast Blues: Dispatches from the Twenty-Year War Between a Television Reporter and His Medium."
