Is JonBenet story another Neo-Con diversion?
It struck me.. if this guy isn't her murderer, and he didn't do it for some sick publicity stunt, then WHO put him up to it or WHO targeted him? Our friends who pull the strings at the White House?

The feeding frenzy around the JonBenet case has removed the spotlight from the more embarrassing issues that were making news lately like:

The Invasion of Lebanon and it's Neo-con support
Wiretapping
Is Bush an Idiot?
and 1000 other issues

I would not put it past Rove and company to pull something like this. The news organizations are like a pack of dogs. You think they are on the trail of something important like an Elephant and then someone lets a rabbit out and they chase it instead!

I might not be too wrong on this one!

2.Do you know what powers and resources he has at his disposal?

3.Do you know if they work 24/7?

4. Do you think the Terri braindead Schiavo fiasco was just a coincidence of time and space?

46. What will it take to convince you
that reality operates on more than 2 dimensions. Perhaps you don't even realize it but your internal debate consists of "Rove controls everything" and "Rove doesn't control everything". Lets add a little texture to our analysis. Many, many events occur at any given time. The corporate media is aware of all these events. A certain event shows a glimpse of bein a big tabloid hit. Ah...Jimmy Hoffa's bidy...oooo JonBenet....eeee....plane diversion...and so many more. Did you ever ask yourself why ALL the news always runs to the tabloid stories in UNISON? Why do you suppose that is? Ratings? BZZZZ - wrong answer. Any tabloid item will get ratings, but there must always remain some minor pretense that its a "relevant" story. So monkey alien impregnates Britney won't fly. But airlines diverted from Italy will.

So you should ask yourself, when a major court decision comes down and the news is on JonBenet, its because someone made that decision. Not only that, that someone and ALL others in his/her position made the same decision.

51. I'm going to puke.
"what happened is very tragic, and what the family has gone through is horrible - but I just don't really care."

So you care about Iraqi kids being killed, but not about American kids being killed?

Charity begins at home, and so does compassion.

The child lived a miserable life, there was evidence of sexual abuse, and millions more kids like her are being physically and sexually abused every day in this country. That's an issue we all ought to be fighting mad about, not saying we "don't really care" about one of the victims.

Reality check: The war is ONE issue of MANY. People in this country are out of work, have no medical care, can't get food stamps, can't even get housing, kids are being abused and killed, and all Democrats want to talk about is the war. I'm against the war, too--but it's ONE of the issues, not the only issue.

May we please, PLEASE have as much concern about the sick and dying in this country, as we do for Iraqis?

about the way I feel about a lot of other things. You don't have a clue who I am, what I do, what organizations I belong to, what or who I support, or anything else about how I live my life. You're going to judge my entire existence from one sentence?

What would you like me to do? She's gone (for ten years already - when do I get to let go?); my sincerest condolences to the family and friends.

I totally agree with you that there are a lot of things that need to be fixed in this country, but the occupation in Iraq is by far the biggest issue facing us at the moment. Even considering all the things you mention wrong with the US, the living situation in Iraq is far worse - because of our government. I am sure there are many Iraqis that would love to trade places with you.

27. A reminder of what bushco is capable of that we know about:
Bush 'planted fake news stories on American TV'
By Andrew Buncombe in Washington
Published: 29 May 2006

Federal authorities are actively investigating dozens of American television stations for broadcasting items produced by the Bush administration and major corporations, and passing them off as normal news. Some of the fake news segments talked up success in the war in Iraq, or promoted the companies' products.

Investigators from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are seeking information about stations across the country after a report produced by a campaign group detailed the extraordinary extent of the use of such items.

The report, by the non-profit group Centre for Media and Democracy, found that over a 10-month period at least 77 television stations were making use of the faux news broadcasts, known as Video News Releases (VNRs). Not one told viewers who had produced the items.

"We know we only had partial access to these VNRs and yet we found 77 stations using them," said Diana Farsetta, one of the group's researchers. "I would say it's pretty extraordinary. The picture we found was much worse than we expected going into the investigation in terms of just how widely these get played and how frequently these pre-packaged segments are put on the air."

Pentagon Probes Military-Sponsored Sites (paying journalists..again)

http://apnews.myway.com//article/20050204/D881UT001.htm ...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon's chief investigator is looking into the military's practice of paying journalists to write articles and commentary for a Web site aimed at influencing public opinion in the Balkans, officials said Friday.

At the request of Larry Di Rita, chief spokesman for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld,
the Pentagon's inspector general, Joseph Schmitz, is reviewing that case and also looking more broadly at Pentagon activities that might involve inappropriate payments to journalists. The Balkans Web site, called Southeast European Times, as well as a second aimed at audiences in north Africa, have no immediately obvious connection to the U.S. government but contain a linked disclaimer that says they are "sponsored by the U.S. European Command." That is the military organization based in Germany responsible for U.S. forces and military activities in Europe and parts of Africa. The second site, called Magharebia and aimed at the Maghreb region that encompasses Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia, is still in development and has not reached the stage of having paid correspondents, said Air Force Lt. Col. Derek Kaufman, a European Command spokesman.

Rumsfeld To Meet with Military Commentators on Iraq

Beating back calls for his resignation, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has summoned military commentators for special Pentagon briefings on Iraq and the war on terrorism, a spokesman said April 17. snip

On April 14, the Pentagon emailed the commentators a fact sheet intended to rebut charges by a group of retired generals that Rumsfeld has given short shrift to military advice, leading to strategic blunders in Iraq.

The fact sheet enumerated the number of times Rumsfeld has met with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The commentators — many of them retired senior officers now working for U.S. television networks — also have been called to a meeting April 18 at the Pentagon with Rumsfeld to discuss Iraq and the broader war on terrorism, said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. snip

”We have a regular program to keep ... people that work for many of your news organizations in here well informed, providing them factual information, statistics, to keep them in a position where they can add some value and context to the reporting that goes on out there,” he said.

A dozen to 15 commentators typically attend the sessions, he said.

PR Meets Psy-Ops in War on Terror
WASHINGTON — On the evening of Oct. 14, a young Marine spokesman near Fallouja appeared on CNN and made a dramatic announcement. "Troops crossed the line of departure," 1st Lt. Lyle Gilbert declared, using a common military expression signaling the start of a major campaign. "It's going to be a long night." CNN, which had been alerted to expect a major news development, reported that the long-awaited offensive to retake the Iraqi city of Fallouja had begun.

~snip~Officials at the Pentagon and other U.S. national security agencies said the CNN incident was not an isolated feint — the type used throughout history by armies to deceive their enemies — but part of a broad effort underway within the Bush administration to use information to its advantage in the war on terrorism. The Pentagon in 2002 was forced to shutter its controversial Office of Strategic Influence (OSI), which was opened shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, after reports that the office intended to plant false news stories in the international media.

But officials say that much of OSI's mission — using information as a tool of war — has been assumed by other offices throughout the U.S. government. Although most of the work remains classified, officials say that some of the ongoing efforts include having U.S. military spokesmen play a greater role in psychological operations in Iraq (news - web sites), as well as planting information with sources used by Arabic TV channels such as Al Jazeera to help influence the portrayal of the United States.

No disrespect, but obviously endless discussions about furking Jon Benet are of more interest to DUers than the "mess of stuff going on politically, electorally and globally". Just today I tried your suggestion by generating two different threads on current issues and I'm not hesitant to say matters of actual importance, only to find people would rather prattle on about Jon Benet or a woman doing performance art with a pig's carcass. You get sick and tired of having to fight for your own threads just to keep them from getting pushed off by the diversion of the week. I've complained about this before and I just furklin' give up. Sometimes I think there are people out there deliberately posting more Jon Benet threads just to keep us from talking about the real issues. It's better than thinking we're just as guilty at feeding the infotainment media as anyone else.

I'm just so very upset right now I'm seriously thinking of taking some time off from DU. I spent over an hour composing what I thought was a well-reasoned, thoughtful post -- one I had thought worthy of my journal -- only to have it deleted because some other folks in a subthread were being rude to one another. So the whole subthread got wiped out, including my post. I feel that was very unfair to me and after fighting to keep relevant threads going on GD I think I'm too angry right now to stick around.

Folks may now return to their regularly scheduled programming of Jon Benet and Mel Gibson.

Later!

an open discussion forum. Admin supports that role for GD, as do the moderators. One thing I keep in mind, though, is that the multiple threads, repeat threads, etc. on this kind of story will fade, as have all of the old "bread and butter" issues - crime - coming from cable news have had their run here.

45. I Agree With You There Quite A Bit. In Fact, I Think That's A Big Reason
why I've been more frustrated in my posts lately. There is so much nonsense repeat threads these last couple of weeks and threads of substance are being lost quickly. It seems like some of us are almost becoming addicted to junk food politics like the cable networks we criticize in the same breath. Pinto is right in the sense that is what GD is often times, but I think we're in quite serious territory right now with the elections looming on us and I wish I saw more thoughtful and strategical posts rather than junkfood and whining.

Thankfully though there are always still some really high quality threads, and maybe I should spend more time finding them and going a few pages back in GD to ensure they can be kicked and brought back to focus.

The cold hard truth is that they give us what we want to watch.

It's depressing, but sadly true.

These real life "Mysteries" always get good ratings. It's like a drama. What it comes down to, is that a majority of Americans want to be entertained. Plus, these stories are very easy for Americans to understand. Most Americans have child-like intelect. These stories have clear "good guys," and "bad guys." Very easy for the people to understand. The Senate? The Supreme Court? Please!

Remember what happened when coverage slowed down on the Natalee Holloway story? Some dumb fucks actually wrote the network and asked if they had any new Holloway news.

So don't say it's all Rove, when it's mostly us.

43. Well this thread didn't go the way I expected!
some great comments along with complaints.

Personally I find the JonBenet coverage insulting and tragic beyond belief.

But I am soooo skeptical of the manipulation of the news media by those with an "Agenda" like Neo-cons, Fundies, or Corporations.

Bottom line...if I don't question things, I am just a slug.

47. Nah, just another bullshit diversion - NFL, Britney Spears, Brangelina . .
The World Cup, Ashlee Simpson's lip-synching, Springer, game shows, Access Hollywood, Mel Gibson's arrest/rant, (Fill in the blank's) battle against addiction/recovered memory of child abuse/cancer/bulimia - it's all grist for the great distraction mill that keeps ignorant people stupefied and satiated.

Not that the corporate news-sewage pump isn't handy for other, more global corporate purposes . . .

54. Seeing as how every single channel had the story on and only a word
or two about the challenge to illegal wiretapping, I would have to go with YES and HELL, YES it's just another in an endless line of distractions.
