I was in the office, and a customer came in. As usual in a small town, there was a lot of "visiting" done as well as business. I asked the man about his 17 year old son, who had fallen in with a bad crowd and who had started to get into trouble.
"I sent him to live with my brother in another town, and Brother is working him hard until school starts," the dad said. "He's a good kid, but is too easily led. Kind hearted-but I hope he learned his lesson." Then the dad paused. "He's talking about joining the military after graduation, and normally I'd think it was a great idea. But with what's going on - over there."
"Too many redeployments," I said, gauging my language, because, after all, he WAS a customer and this IS the most conservative part of Arkansas.
"Too big a mess," the dad said. "His dad had sense enough to stop before he went to Bagdad-he knew SOMETHING was wrong about doing that. And now we have to pay for Junior's mistakes."
"I was against the war before it started," I said. "I couldn't see how it would work out any differently than Viet Nam."
The dad agreed. "It's a mess, and getting worse. YOU WERE RIGHT IN TRYING TO STOP IT."
Then he sighed and left. He wasn't a radical type, just a regular fellow, the kind they call a "good old boy" around here. And he knows. The jig is up, "Junior".
