Lieberman -- "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
That was, of course, Michael Corleone in "Godfather II."

I posted this quote on a thread this morning and have since been thinking about it. If Lieberman wins as an Independent, would we want him as part of the Republican senate caucus, or the Democratic caucus?

If his caucusing with the Dems brings about a 51 to 49 Democratic controlled senate, (as happened with Jim Jeffords for a while), isn't that something we'd want?

I consider Lieberman to be an enemy and I'm all for a Ned Lamont landslide. But just in case ...

What are your thoughts on this?

1. If he wins, I want him in the "D" caucus, of course...
one more for us, one less for them.

6. One more body toward a majority, of course...
even if we don't get a majority in the 2006 elections, we'll likely still have the momentum come 2008, since we can depend on Bush and the GOP Congress to continue to fuck up. Thus, another person in the Dem caucus, even if we don't achieve a majority in '06, is a necessity going into '08.

8. I'm amazed you even have to answer that question.
But I have to do the same pretty much every day here. The very basic notion that a majority means a whole lot more than any one or two Senators seems lost at DU.

2. The problem is, I don't think he will caucus with the dems...he has
become a repug and he owes them for getting behind him and supporting him ... so I really think he will do as they want...I can't stand this man and if he decides to become a rethug, good riddance..

3. Depends - I mean yeah, he's not trustworthy
On the other hand, committee chairs are very powerful, and if Reid or another Democrat becomes president of the senate with Lieberman's support, well, better than the alternative.

9. Assuming that he does decide to "become a rethug," CT can always
hold a recall election. (I'm assuming CT has recalls in their state constitution.) Even if there are Dems who would vote for him in the general election, how many would vote for him in a recall if he became a Republican?

4. It is a difficult decision
Some here want to throw Lieberman off his committee assignments right now. I see the merit in this, but if Reid does this, he has to realize that there would then be no hope of keeping Joe in the Caucus were he to be re-elected. Frankly, though, I think Liberman is going to jump ship and vote with the pukes if he is re-elected. I am sure his wet dream is a 50dem, 49 repuke Senate, where he would be the deciding vote and all would have to bow down to his mightyness...

10. Lieberman is a sellout, traitor to the Dems.
I wouldn't trust him with a wooden nickel. To me, he is no better than Dick Cheney.

13. If he wins, he'll back Republicans
That's what he's been doing all along anyway. If he wins he'll officially change to a Republican, and if he doesn't, he'll back them anyway.
