Indiana resisting site for Divine Strake
Indiana resisting site for Divine Strake
By Judy Fahys
The Salt Lake Tribune

An Indiana limestone quarry served as a pre-testing ground in 2004 and 2005 for the massive Divine Strake once planned for this spring at the Nevada Test Site, a report says.

Indianans, unaware of the 3,000-pound quarry tests near suburban communities, were surprised by the news, reported Thursday in the Louisville Courier-Journal, and are vowing to make sure their state does not become an alternative site for 700-ton Divine Strake test.

The community resistance “will be widespread, persistent, and they will ultimately be successful,” said Andy Mahler, an Indiana environmental activist. Mahler, like Utah and Nevada critics of Divine Strake, said there is heightened concern that the blasts are “a dangerous step on a slippery slope” to a new era of U.S. testing and use of nuclear weapons.

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency has scrapped the Divine Strake test for this year and has said it does not expect to go forward with it until mid- to late 2007.

A spokeswoman for the agency would not confirm the newspaper reports. “I'm sorry. I do not have any comments on that. Thank you,” she said, before hanging up.

1. IU students will not like this at all
The "test site" is near the Bloomington campus of Indiana University and I'm almost sure there will be a huge outcry led by the students. They are saying this is "at a site 70 miles south of Indianapolis" well... guess what's there? IU.

2. I'm in Utah and am pleased they gave up here - now Indiana needs to raise
holy hell and make sure they give up the idea ALL TOGETHER.

3. Slightly off topic, here, but what is the derivation of the name
"Divine Strake"? A "strake" has to do with the planking on a boat, so how does that relate to a ridiculously powerful bomb? And how can the planking on a boat become "divine"? Does anyone have a clue on this?

6. Indiana voted for bush, they have no right to complain about
what he does to them.

7. Bullshit. I live in Utah and they had planned on testing in NV which
we are downwind from. There is no such thing as a Blue or Red state. I am as progressive as they come and my children don't deserve this.

12. I hope a lot of Hoosiers are having serious buyer's remorse.
I know a lot here in Kentucky are having second thoughts( the ones who can think).
