Losing the linchpin

The conventional wisdom was so widely believed, there hardly seemed any point to questioning it. The alleged terrorist plot would be a political boon for the Bush White House, the timing would hurt Democrats, and the story had the ability to completely reshape the last 12 weeks of the campaign cycle.

Since the story captured the nation's attention, however, seven national polls have been conducted. If there was a bump for Bush, it's hiding well.

* Zogby: the president's job approval rating dropped from 36% to 34%.

* Gallup: his approval rating fell from 40% to 37%.

* CBS News: the president's support remained flat at 36%.

* Newsweek: Bush's approval rating improved to 38% from 35%.

* Fox News: the president's support remained flat at 36%.

* AP/Ipsos: his approval rating fell from 36% to 33%.

* Harris: the president's support remained flat at 34%.

In six of the seven national polls, the president's support dropped or remained the same since Americans heard about the alleged terrorist plot. In other words, the story that would obviously help Bush's standing isn't helping him at all.

did. I think they know that.

10. especially w/ Cheney insisting we'll get hit again if DEMS take over
well if we do get hit again then what will be their excuse? and will they use to invoke emergency powers and a draft?

They are seriously mis-reading the public and the economic and military implications of their failures to truly improve security since 9/11

5. Dear 33% (repost)
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 09:40 AM by underpants
This was posted a few months ago but it still excellent

Dear 33%

I feel for you. I really do. I feel for anyone suffering from severe mental illness.

Now, now. Don't get testy. I don't mean it as snark. I mean it as fact. You truly are suffering from a mental illness -- post-traumatic stress disorder. Yes, the same disorder our soldiers get in the field. Somehow you got it on 9/11.

I never realized how terrified that day made you, 33%. Yes, it was a horrible, scary day. I remember. But obviously much more frightening for you than for me. It scared you so much, your mind simply gave up rationality. We 67%ers know -- we've listened to you. We've listened to you in one breath say that Saddam was a butcher and that this is a war to save innocent lives, and then just a few seconds later say Islam is inherently violent and all Muslims need to be targeted, surveilled, and destroyed. We've listened with pity as you described in ever more complete detail the architecture of your delusion, the monsters you fear will kill you. You tell us we have to fight them over there, so we don't have to fight them over here, but then you tell us we must surrender all our rights because we are surrounded by your demons.

These are not the workings of a rational mind. Can you see that?

33%, you are sick. You need help.

You need treatment. A good liberal psychologist could help you work through your PTSD. Failing that, a good liberal friend. If you can't find treatment on your own, let us know. Just ask 3 people for help -- we'll be two of them.

Love and hope for your recovery,
67%

15. Makes you wonder about that 90% immediately after 9/11
Were people expressing support for Stupidhead, or their solidarity as Americans who had just sustained a shocking loss? Because it seems there was a lot of deliberate confusion over this not-really-so-very-fine point for a long time after 9/11, and it was used a bludgeon to quell dissent, stifle debate, and otherwise deprive the people of their right to speak freely and openly.

Now, who stood to gain from that? Think, think. And who aided and abetted these folks, either actively by joining in the condemnation of dissenters or passively by refusing to call out the forces of repression on their tactics?

Bush will be long and safely gone before these questions are scrutinized, if they ever are.

18. That 37 percent would dump the Little Turd from Crawford with the Truth...
Just one case in point: Bush likes good lookin' men.

Bush prefers our pretty boy to his pretty boy

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but his policies are aimed to hurt gay people.

19. Interesting that Newsweek's Conventional Wisdom said he'd bounce up
The immediate assumption on the part of mainstream media is that any sign of danger will help Bush. With out checking any opinion polls, Newsweek's editors just decided that a foiled terror attack was good news for Bush. It was good news for the people who would've been on those flights, of course. But it assumed most ordinary people are idiots to think they can't figure out that if al-Qaeda spinoffs like this British plot are still this active and can still muster this level of support from their communities, the war on terror is being horribly mismanaged--if not lost.

Fortunately, most voters aren't as stupid as most mainstream reporters. They see that the war is a failure and that Bush's half assed efforts to fight terror pale compared to the support for terrorists that his failed war in Iraq is generating.
