1. Alan Mollohan Investigation
Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-WV) is under federal investigation for possible conflicts of interest between his legislative duties and personal investments. This was in response to allegations made by the National Legal and Policy Center. In April Mollohan stepped down as ranking member of the House ethics committee for the duration of the investigation.

You list Mollohan as one of those whose investigations are associated with the Abramoff scandal. I don't know of any such connection, do you?

Thanks, BTW, for sharing this helpful list.

for funneling money through Abramoff connected non-profits to friends and supporters -

3. Which of these non-profits were connected to Abramoff?
I know that he earmarked federal funds for allocations to non-profits, but I didn't know any of these were tied to Abramoff.

7. favor factory
http://porkopolis.blogspot.com/2006/04/wsj-reports-federal-prosecutors-have.html
The $136 million building is being built with taxpayers' money for the Institute for Scientific Research, a nonprofit group launched by the local congressman, Democrat Alan Mollohan, and funded almost entirely through provisions he put into annual spending bills.

A 12-term congressman, Mr. Mollohan sits on the House Appropriations Committee, a panel that disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff dubbed the "favor factory." Working with fellow West Virginian Sen. Robert Byrd, Mr. Mollohan has steered at least $178 million to nonprofit groups in his district over the past five years using "earmarks"--special-interest provisions that are slipped into spending bills to direct money to projects.

New tax records show that Rep. Alan Mollohan (D-W.Va.) steered $179 million in federal earmarks to companies that contributed to charities that he is associated with. According to Bloomberg, "The money went to 21 companies and nonprofit groups that contributed $225,427 to the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation in 2004 -- almost half of the charity's revenue". Charities connected to politicians (or spouses of politicians) are a way for companies and interests to curry favor from a legislator out of the public eye. Numerous lawmakers have used their charities inappropriately including Senators Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) and Bill Frist (R-Tenn.). I'm sure that there are many more political charity abuses that go unnoticed.

8. I'm not picking up what you're laying down.
Mollohan's presence on the House Committee on Appropriations does not make him an associate of Abramoff.

Mollohan helped funnel at least $179 million in U.S. government contracts over the last six years to companies that gave to his family-run charity.

The money went to 21 companies and nonprofit groups that contributed $225,427 to the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation in 2004 -- almost half of the charity's revenue, according to the documents. Congressman Mollohan is the secretary of the foundation, which is named for his father.

This nonprofit distributes scholarships to West Virginia students.

There is a widespread practice of trading Congressional access for campaign contributions and for donations like these. I find the convention at questionable but it is not illegal without a quid pro quo.

The Vandalia Heritage Foundation, which Mollohan established in 1998, is a nonprofit that is more likely to have been used for "...funneling money through Abramoff connected non-profits to friends and supporters...". This recipient of federal funds is involved in housing redevelopment efforts in Mollohan's district.

Neither of these nonprofits, however, nor any of the other nonprofits and companies that were beneficiaries of Mollohan's funding earmarks had any relevant relationship with Abramoff that tied the two together. This scandal has no connection with the ongoing Abramoff debacle.

4. Good job!
A compendium of the still open cases from armchair subversive and several other sites would be good, too. I am afraid that a comprehensive listing of republiclown misdeeds, even just the ones well known, would grow to fill an encyclopedia.

The frog march set begins to look like the Veiled Prophet parade, of St. Louis fame.

9. Need to add Virgil Goode (R-VA) to Cunningham list...
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 12:05 PM by calipendence
He's is basically being investigated the same way as Katherine Harris is, for being one of the top three recipients of MZM cash (Harris and Cunningham being the other two). You might also add Duncan Hunter to it too, as he's been noted on many articles in this category, and has worked with former fellow congress critter Cunningham on many occasions, and I've heard rumors to the effect that he "might be indicted" soon too.

Also, David Burtt and Joseph Hefferon, former Director and Deputy Director of the controversial CIFA agency in the Defense Department both just resigned right before the newer report on Cunningham scandal was released too. I bet they are ripe for indictment as well!

Mitchell Wade should be in the already indicted and found guilty category there.

10. Let's not forget Brian Doyle.

He was the Homeland SECURITY staffer who was caught in a sting trying to set up a meet with what he thought was a 14 year old girl while on the job. He confessed and his case is still pending.

11. Add perhaps an "Election fraud" gate...
That would identify those various election officials either being sued, investigated or indicted for crimes:

Indicted in this category would be:

Tony Achundo - Registrar of Voters (R) Monterey County, CA. Resigned and now facing 43 criminal charges.
Mikel Haas - Registrar of Voters (R) San Diego County, CA. Being sued for various problems with CA50 vote.

I'm sure many more could be added to this list. Might be useful to build up a consciousness of the potential robbery that will happen in November if more of these criminals aren't stopped before then.
