I'm done / I'm obsolete
For better than 5 months I have looked for a job and have found nothing . it's not for a lack of trying , I have looked at everything and anything that i feel i can pull do .

I have spent the last 30 odd years working for ford dealerships and I have vast experience in all phases , I have always been honest with repairs whether doing them of performing them becouse I know what it's like to be on all sides of things , i look at each situation as I am the one paying the money for the service .

Well today I think I've come to the end . I went to many dealerships of all sorts on models . Today was Honda and I will tell you this , All the years of employees not following rules and procedure has turned a world of suspician , you now must be trained in every step you do whether it's talking on the phone , selling service work or talking in person one on one .

I was interviewed for two hours by two different people and was about to say , I am simply a human with years of honest knowledge and experience , I am not a machine primed and ready to become a trained slave rather than an untrained slave both of whom are supposed to be human but function as a well oiled unfeeling blank machine who does still for reasons unknown to me , breath air .

I am either to old , over qualified or not prime manufactured material .

I can do the task and perform but this is not what is desired .

All of the business is taken over by huge corporate box units or the beaten to death over driven competition that won't pay or can afford to pay a living wage so this renders me basically screwed .

I suppose a cross country road trip to destination unknown with the few bits of money we have left is in order to do what , I can't say .

I am now near entering the world of the jobless and soon homeless unless something happens very soon . I have got to the point of not liking life much , what is there to look forward to in bush's screwed up death all around us , hope shot to complete hell world .

1. can you become an "on call" repairman, advertising
on Craigslist, say?

If you have enough tools for basic maintenance repairs (if I'm reading your line of work right), you could charge people a reasonable fee to fix/maintain their cars at their homes, garages, office parking lots, etc...

And if you're taking that trip, you might want to get ahold of William Least Heat Moon's book "Blue Highways," about a cross-country jaunt undertaken in similar circumstances.

Best of luck to you...

5. I know a guy who works on cars out of his driveway
He's been doing it for years. He started with just an occasional repair job or tune-up, but now he's as busy as he wants to be.

Don't give up. Step back. Regroup. It's hard to sell yourself when you're down. Try to be positive. I know it's hard, but visualize what you want and you can make it happen. Good luck.

10. Especially a Good, HONEST mechanic. What state do you live in?
It hasn't been that long ago that a "brake place" told my husband it was going to cost $800 to do what in the end amounted to CHANGE HIS BRAKE PADS -- fortunately, he ran, but still! Urgh!

I say spend a little money on some flyers, and put them on some cars at your neighborhood supermarket. Be your own boss! :)

I have nothing coming in , I have sold almost everything sellable and my wife get's SDI for $600 a month and we have little let on credit cards . But I know there's an auto repair place at one of our hospital parking lots, have you thought
about being a mechanic in either a government or a large company facility. I know that I had
a friend that had a husband that repaired police cars, I would try the school district, see if
they have anybody who services their vehicles, schools are starting up everywhere and they
have good benefits. Also the hospital has a guy come everytime somebody is locked out of their
car, its $25.00 or he'll fix a flat.

16. it will change the situation -- for the worse
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 05:13 PM by pitohui
in another post i believe he said he was 57 -- it will make it impossible for him to buy private health insurance in most states -- some people have been denied private health insurance coverage for taking anti-depressants for as little as 6 weeks

people are not being real, the insurance costs of being self-employed are impossible to bear for folks of that age

i don't know what to tell him either, if i knew the secret of getting a job, i'd have one

he has to somehow bridge the gap until he's old enough to get social security and medicare, unfortunately, even if he can start receiving his social security payments at 62 he still will have to have private health insurance until he's 65 if he can't get a job w. benefits

he can try to go the self employment route OR he can take anti-depressants but he can't do both and have any real chance of bridging the gap

on reading further, i think the need for him to obtain expensive tools and certification make the suggestion to become a self-employed mechanic pretty much out of his reach

9. I have a serious suggestion
New Orleans is absolutely desperate for anyone who can repair cars. Desperate.

There is a week to two week wait on repairs.

There is housing, but its difficult to find.

craigslist.com can help.

I don't know where you are, or if you would be willing to relocate there. I love that city, so I would go there in a heartbeat if my own situation would permit.

Good luck. You will find something.

46. I second this suggestion.
I'm in Mississippi and any good skilled labor is hard to come by, it seems. Everyone is understaffed. And compared to Los Angeles, Louisiana (or Mississippi, if you want to try your luck here) will seem inexpensive to you--although not as inexpensive as it was before the storm, I hear. :(

By the way, I found the house we're renting on craigslist.com.

Life takes some amazing twists and turns, and also some amazingly twisted ones. Keep of good cheer. You sound like a smart person, you will rally yourself.

15. I live in Los Angeles CA
This may be a huge part of the problem . I was a nechanic but now since most of my tools are gone due to theft and I did not have alot , here in LA you do certain tasks on cars , mine was electrical systems and A/C and windows and such .

I have not doen repair work for 8 years and got much more involved in the customer service end and I did well .

Trouble is these days cars are so specialized that you must keep up with ford specific training or you can't work on certain things , cars are high tech nowdays so this puts you in a position and the cost of tools and such made the customer service end better for someone my age .

I have wood working experience as well but here no one will hire an old guy , they want speed and youth and a laborer , I was at one time but I can't keep up these days , things have changed alot in the last 20 years and alot more in the last 5 .

I have tried every sort of job I can find and so far no results even though I got interviews , no one is in a hurry to hire . I am waiting on an interview with a mercedes dealership and it's been 2 weeks , they have my number and app and resume but they are in no rush either .

My wife keeps telling me to take a week off looking because I am so very stressed out looking and dealing with no return , i am at my wits end and a week to me seems like I may miss one opportunity but maybe not , not the way things are going . Man , i don't know how much more internal stress I can really take , it is panic to me , just panic .

but in the south (especially small towns) there is plenty of need for a good "hand."

i live in an area that is almost completely untouched by the corporate mindfuck. people are a little slower, but then you are more likely to deal with people instead of drones.

they pay less, but it is easier to be poor in a small southern town.

BUT YOU MUST HAVE PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION, otherwise you will be a non-viable human being, job or no job.

17. Believe me, I know the feeling
The lie they tell you is that an education will fix all your problems. Well, I have an education. I'm a biologist, with a Ph. D. who is apparently overqualified for everything, yet somehow manages at the same time to not have a single skill that is usable to anybody. I was told this just this morning by a staffing shitheel who looked at my resume and rejected it immediately as being grossly overqualified. She then goes on to say that ALL my experience is in fisheries work (it isn't) and didn't want to hear anything about other experience I have, or the skills I do have that would translate to other jobs, such as computer use, data entry, phonebank work, etc. And this was after they insisted I fill out paperwork for over an hour before they would even allow me to ask questions!

If you can get a work visa (check the government of Canada website). Employers are absolutely desperate for employees here. Some places are closing because they simply cannot get anyone. Check it out. But, don't get your hopes up. Your best bet would be to contact a U.S. company that has offices up here. I shudder to say this, but Halliburton is big in the oil patch. 31. Yes, but it would be illegal
You would need a SIN - Social Insurance Number. And everything would have to be under the table. I don't recommend it. If you get caught, well, hardly anything would happen to you. You might get deported and never allowed in again. But, like I said, a lot of U.S. companies have offices here (mostly up north in the tar sands - Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, et al). Check their websites for positions. You can make over $15 an hour in Ft. Mac in the Timmy's for crying out loud!

32. I looked into moving to canada for several reasons
However it looks like it takes 52 months to get a visa and you have to have enough funding to last 6 months and then you must fit into the work force .

If it were a matter of simply moving there on the wing and getting employment then things would be different and it would be strange since I have never lived or worked outside the US .

I have read all the replies and i am happy to see there are so many supportive people here .

The main thing I battle is hope now because each job i apply for and there have been so many and each rejection or acts of no promise just knocks me down . I go in positive and know I will get the job but then I go home with less and less hope and no inspiration .

Today I broke down when I got home , just stopping at the store for a few tiny items I felt I was in a fog , nothing seemed real and it terrified me . I am not weak but there is a point you reach when things begin to look like time is running out and then what .

My wife has been very supportive , I told her she should maybe move in with her somewhat useless father since he drinks and her younger sister rather than ending up on the streets with me but she said she will go to the streets and not leave me , we are a team , been together for 26 years and have become one even though we are not the same we believe in the same things and issues and get along even through hell . Oh we have seen hard times when we took the chance in 1981 and moved to calif and had nothing much other that would fit in the van I had and we were broke for years , however I have no trouble landing a job in a week once we were settled . 15 years ago i could go onto any ford dealership and walk out with a job that day , I had three lined up in 1991 in three dealerships so i could work a 22 week run to see what was good and then if if was not i moved onto the next one and the third was the best .

Now there are no help wanted signs anywhere , most jobs require online application or a mailed in resume , few have a phone number you can call so it's though and it's different and it's relentless , it's close to hell for me now .

I know I'm not alone , this doesn't help , we all need support but we all live with our minds and troubles and we a born alone and end alone in this world .

I think about all the trops and Iraqis who have died and the people in lebanon and I have to think which is true , all these people , all of them are just as real and are just as important as me , i am not special and they had their dreams and family and friends . Look what happened to them , this troubles me alot . So many people died and for nothing .

Things in this world since bush got in have become so disheartening that at times I can barely breath thinking about it all .

I take breaks from this horror , seeing it and hearing it make me wonder what are we all headed for and what will this look like when it ends if it ever does .

You do find time jobless to do alot more research and AAR listening , I can understand how us citizens don't know what's going on , when i was working I knew and looked and listened but even then you just don't have the time to really find alot or think alot about it .

There is so much going on that you wonder where to start and what is the first step . Without a job however ends all that for me , i will be amoung the uncounted poor .

41. I hope it helps to know so many of us have been though similar
situations and that you have support here. Can't help you with the field you are in but ...can you get unemployment or at least apply for Medicaid so you know you will have some health coverage in the interim.

There's always a demand for salesmen and maybe if you look in your local newspaper you can find some support groups where you can do networking by meeting other folks who might give some ideas. Check your local library, too because they might have fliers about groups whom you can network with that will give support.

I know how hard it can be...and with all that's going on...how depressing...but hang in there...and don't get discouraged. Take whatever aid you can if it's assistance or Medicaid to tide you over and networking does help because of the support and ideas.

:hugs:

37. You still in Cali?
AZ is bringing a google headquarters to Tempe. They're going to hire bunches of people. The phone company always hires people and they will train you. Hotels casinos in NV hiring.

I hope you will forgive my asking, but are you having thoughts about death or suicide? I would have PM'd you but I haven't figured out how to do it yet.

I'll be going to sleep very soon but I'll reply tomorrow if need be.

45. Hey, you have a computer right?
This is how you do it. Look in the paper for estate sales and garage sales... go on out to them and buy things for cheap and sell on e-bay. You know cars and parts.. you can pick these things up and sell them. I know that's what my brother-in-law did for a while when he was between jobs. It paid for everything until he got some work.. think outside the box for a while and something will come to pass.

48. Your story made me think of "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel
I really feel for you but with your wife's support I know you will get through this.

http://www.lyricsdomain.com/16/peter_gabriel/dont_give_up.html

Here are the first few lines:

in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground

don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong

49. Check out Ford dealerships in the D.C. Area
There are a lot of them and this area is almost immune to the current econ. hardships. D.C. is a hugely populated and rude area with long and boring commutes and way-overpriced real estate but, people around here are very educated and not likely to be looking for work at a Ford dealership.

Seriously, check it out.

51. Thank all of you again for your concern
and suggestions and support .

i sold all the personal items I had on ebay just to make ends meet so i am familar with ebay . In fact I applied to 2 positions on craigs list doing ebay work and I have a good feedback score , i felt this would be right in line but i have not heard back from either .

My wife suggested we buy items and sell on ebay , it is a matter of the right items to be successful .

Here you cannot work on cars in a residential area and in order to do handyman work you need liability ins of you can end up in sorry shape . I have built a few cabinets for a few people and then dropped them off , this I can do without being insured but it was only a few for people I knew , so far no new requests , it takes networking and I have not got connections enough to go far .

Moving is not an option since the money to do this would break us now and we held onto hope of finding a job , it was a gamble I had to take .

It amazes me how much they put you through just to get a job in a field I have been in for so long . Today was an hour with the service manager and an hour with the general manager .
i did not get a direct answer from either . they did say they could tell I was very detailed and asked how well i multi-task , well i can do alot at once and have alot of experience doing this as well even under pressure . They kept stressing how pressured this work was , well no kidding i did it for alot larger dealership than this one , i did not say this of course .

I am going to call them tomarrow to ask how soon they need someone since they did not say and left me hanging . All I know is one advisor was in a bad accident and they can't hold his job that long , he has been out a week with alot of mending to do and the shop foreman who is the first fellow I spoke to for an hour told me he was leaving in 10 days to another honda dealer close to his home , they both asked alot of questions on how I would handle issues a manager would be faced with so maybe they are considering me for that position or they have already a replacement , they did not say but the line of questioning lead down that road .

I get my hopes up ,my wife is getting real worried and the pressure is on , she goes up and down which i understand . I wake in a start many times at night and I'm right into reality with the first thought , I have no job oh my god what will we do and this is terrifing .

I go to bed no later than 11pm and wake up several times and get up at 6 am freaked out .

We had one 5 hour break on the 31st of july with the CSNY concert and yesterday we went back to the hollywood bowl just to take photo's and try to hold onto that feeling , I know this sound insane but we felt better somehow just being in the empty hollywood bowl to try to bring it back , we have had no other break for 5 months other than their concert . Then today our spirits were murdered by my interview ordeal , i left feeling beaten , it seemed so horrid of a portrait they painted .

Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 01:40 AM by dweller
this poem for you in your circumstances. I was where you were 9 months ago, and i find it inspiring.

THROW YOURSELF LIKE A SEED
Shake off this sadness, and recover your spirit;
sluggish you will never see the wheel of fate
that brushes your heel as it turns going by,
the man who wants to live is the man in whom life is abundant.

Now you are only giving food to that final pain
which is slowly winding you in the the nets of death,
but to live is to work, and the only thing which lasts
is the work; start then, turn to the work.

Throw yourself like a seed as you walk, and into your own field,
don't turn your face for that would be to turn to death,
and do not let the past weigh down your motion.

Leave what's alive in the furrow, what's dead in yourself,
for life does not move in the same way as a group of clouds;
from your work you will be able one day to gather yourself.

Miguel de Unamuno

Your interview sounds positive to me, perhaps you should return and speak with the workers in the shop and make yourself known. I know that sounds unconventional, but that's the way i think.

peace
dp

56. auto stuff on ebay....
have you considered selling auto parts on ebay? go to the junkyard and find popular things? my brothers have done this. maybe find things you can fix and then sell? a distant relative started picking hubcaps off of the road, and has a good business selling on ebay?

on to other things...have you tried applying for a repair service manager position? you sure have the experience. how about teaching at a local high school?

I feel for you...another middle class victim.

best of luck to you!!!!

57. Send them a follow-up note thanking them for the interview.
It will tell them how serious you are and reinforce how attentive to detail you are.

Please forgive me if I'm stating the obvious. But it's something many interviewees forget to do.

Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 02:15 AM by skids
Just a suggestion. Also auto insurance estimators, if you know body work, too.

(And on edit: I'm right there with you. I've got good skills at several rather specialised things, but they are never the exact mix people seem to want, and they just do not seem to understand that my work record shows that I can tool up fast and am competent, and that's all that matters, really, in my business. They aren't looking for competent, they are looking for "looks good in slacks" or for some sort of CYA interview process so they can hire their wife's cousin's brother in law.)

55. So many of us have been there OP.
And you're not alone. Sometimes a person can feel estranged from the human race because the human race has lost its humanity.

Keep hope by giving hope to others. Helping others has always helped me through the * shit. And yes blues90, I believe you -it's a real unfair rough go for you now. Keep trudging blues90. It always gets better for me when I do the right thing.

66. Blues - Check out this site...
Maybe you could get just enough in funds to move to a better location...

http://www.modestneeds.org / - from their website:

Modest Needs is a non-profit organization reaching out to hard-working individuals and families who suddenly find themselves faced with small, emergency expenses that they have no way to afford on their own.

Most persons living paycheck to paycheck earn just barely too much to qualify for any type of conventional assistance. This means they can't receive the help they need to overcome a short-term crisis - until they've already lost everything.

Modest Needs exists because we think there's a better way to do things. As far as we're concerned, no hard-working person should ever have to choose between taking a child to the doctor and putting food on the table.

Heartfelt good wishes from me to you!

Its a damn shame that good honest people like yourself have such problems when the worst people in the world are pulling in billions of stolen dollars and get huge tax cuts.

I wish I had something else to say that didn't sound trite or meaningless, so I will end with a huge and hearty good night and good luck to you :toast:!
