Conservatives Want To Scare Lamont Voters, Representing American Majority

So of course, rather than throw support to Lieberman, the administration and its friends in the media have tried to make Lamont voters feel like the fringe left, even though they in fact agree with a majority of Americans on a number of key issues.

Vice President Cheney complained that Lamont's victory encourages "the Al Qaeda types." How desperate are conservatives to bash Lamont supporters? White House Press Secretary Tony Snow suggested that voting for Lamont meant to "ignore the difficulties and walk away" from fighting the war on terror. Fox News Channel correspondent David Bass said an “unruly” female passenger on an airplane flight was "probably not an al Qaeda affiliate, probably not a terrorist, could just be a Ned Lamont supporter." Before the primary, the conservative media offered the broad theme that those who support Lamont are "cut and run" McGovernites who lack the cajones to stay the course in a dangerous world.

All these statements land squarely on the crossroads of hyperbole and stupidity. They are part of a coordinated strategy to try to convince a majority of Americans to not vote like a majority -- starting with the Lamont-Lieberman rematch.

1. When you're alone with that sheet of paper or ballot
(if you are to believe in real elections still) ...

Nobody can see you vote fringe or "patriotic" ...

2. but that's not when decisions are made
lots of people make decisions based on what rises above the din.

if you link Lamont or Democrat with "cut and run" or "I'm not safe," then the Bushies have done their job. And a lot of casual observers are being given this linkage over and over.

5. My point was this
you can go along with the crowd and support publicly whomever you want ... but when it comes down to the actual moment of truth, I hope that people will really vote their conscience this time ... in a time and place where nobody can see you going against all the people who try to pressure you

(and yes, I know this is for all parties involved ...)

6. agreed
but will people trust their conscience?

You might personally be against the war, want to see the troops come home, etc., but if you are told over and over that such a decision is irresponsible, fringe-ish, or anti-American (anti-troop), do you think twice?

Given the closeness of elections, if a few people out of 100 think twice and two or three change their mind, that's a lot of elections lost.

It's a lot easier to say to a pollster you are against the war than to step into a voting booth and vote anti-war.

3. Make no mistake, President Bush and Cheney
see what is at stake in the Lamont race, and are doing what they can to screw with it.
