How should Democrats handle the Terror issue?
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 12:10 PM by quinnox
With the forthcoming 2006 elections on the way, how should Democrats tackle the terror issue? Should they minimize it like some Duers say, or should they follow a hawkish strategy of saying they will get the terrorists. Or should they just ignore it altogether. What effect would these strategies have on their results in the elections?

If Democrats get in office, what should be their terror strategy? Negotiate or diplomacy or "kill 'em all" or a combination?

1. how about reframing the word "terror" for a start...
you can't have a fucking war on terror...you can
go after "terrorists" and charge them with crimes,
but bombing whole countries like we have done
to kill "terrorists" is anathema to real intelligence.

This administration has been incompetent, criminally wasteful
with American dollars and lives sending Americans into
an illegal invasion. They have wasted any goodwill the
rest of the world gave us after 9/11 and squandered
respect for our laws and civil rights now eroding
under this administration.

Just tell the fucking truth.

3. exactly
the era of Wars on Abstractions must end. The War on Drugs® and the War on Terror® are nothing more than political PR campaigns that have resulted in nothing more than death, destruction and the loss of civil liberties.

Every time a 'pundit' or a congress critter use those phrases, they betray the truth.

2. We should point out that Dems were strong on terror BEFORE the Repubs
and that we remain strong now, but that there are other issues that we cannot continue to neglect if we want to have anything left to protect.

Every idea the Republicans came up with to protect us from terrorism after 9-11 was an idea the Democrats proposed before 9-11, and that the Republicans rejected along purely partisan lines. 9-11 was their fault, not hours. We warned them, they didn't listen. That's what we should be reminding people. (Our candidates can't say it unless they were in office before 9-11, but the rest of us can.)

4. How about taking a real approach to terror?
We can't afford to come across as looking "weak" on terror - we'll get our clocks cleaned every time. Instead, we need to point out how the Bush approach has only made us more vulnerable to terrorism, and to go after the REAL bad guys out there - these wahabbi sects that produce terrorism, and put pressure on Saudi Arabia to rein these sects in.

5. Bush can't even protect us with 3 days warning
How the hell is he going to protect us when there is no warning?

7. HERE IS THE TALKING POINT - Memorize it !!
"Thinking of this as a war is old thinking. Wars are won on a battlefield against organized troops of a foriegn state. This administration is still thinking in the past when they use the word "war". We need to think in totally new ways to handle this kind of threat. The Democratic Party is the party of progessive thinkers, the Republicans a party of out-of-date ideas. Sending our troops into a foreign country to entrench and wait for terrorists to attack just so they can try to kill them is NOT the way we will defeat Terrorism in this world. We need an entirely new kind of organization to find and route out terrorists, and the Democrats are the ones that will be responsible to create this new organization."

8. And as Gore said
the war on terrorism would be helped by leading the world with moral authority, not domination.

We need friends in the world, not more enemies. This administration doesn't cultivate those kinds of relationships.

9. Did you just say Sam Fischer?
Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell...ahhh, now there you go.

If Tom Clancy weren't such a neocon, I'd appoint him Secretary of Defense ;)

12. Expose it for what it is. A manufactured bogeyman.
Treat it like the police issue that it is, rather than the looming catastrophe that it isn't. The emperor has no clothes.
